Southern Hemisphere Mining has updated its JORC Mineral Resource Estimate for the Llahuin Copper-Gold-Molybdenum Project in Chile, reporting a substantial 218 million tonnes at 0.38% copper equivalent with significant contained metals and promising exploration upside.
- JORC Mineral Resource Estimate totals 218Mt at 0.38% CuEq
- Contained metals include 496,600t copper, 654,900oz gold, and 12,500t molybdenum
- Resource spans three deposits with potential for further growth
- Exploration Target of 260-340Mt at lower grades defined, exclusive of current resource
- Planned deep drilling of Curiosity-Southern Porphyry JV target in Q4 2025
Resource Update Highlights Scale and Quality
Southern Hemisphere Mining (ASX, SUH) has released a comprehensive update to the JORC Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) for its Llahuin Copper-Gold-Molybdenum Project in central Chile. The updated resource now stands at 218 million tonnes grading an average 0.38% copper equivalent (CuEq), incorporating nearly half a million tonnes of copper, over 650,000 ounces of gold, and 12,500 tonnes of molybdenum.
This resource is distributed across three main deposits, Central Porphyry, Cerro De Oro, and Ferro Carril, with the company emphasizing the strong potential to expand these figures further. The update reflects extensive drilling campaigns, including in-fill and step-out drilling, and sophisticated geophysical surveys that have refined the geological understanding of the project.
Exploration Target Suggests Significant Upside
Beyond the current resource, Southern Hemisphere has delineated an Exploration Target ranging from 260 to 340 million tonnes at grades between 0.20% and 0.30% copper, 0.08 to 0.10 grams per tonne gold, and 50 to 60 parts per million molybdenum. This target is exclusive of the existing resource and excludes the Curiosity-Southern Porphyry Target, a large geophysical anomaly scheduled for drilling in the fourth quarter of 2025 under a joint venture with FMR Resources Limited.
The Exploration Target is conceptual but supported by over 60,000 metres of drilling, geochemical sampling, and geophysical data, indicating a substantial mineralized footprint that could significantly enhance the project's scale if converted to resources.
Metallurgical Testwork and Mining Outlook
Preliminary metallurgical testwork indicates promising recoveries, with copper recovery rates between 84% and 91%, gold between 41% and 57%, and molybdenum ranging widely but with potential for improvement through optimization. The mineralization is amenable to conventional flotation processing, producing clean concentrates with minimal deleterious elements.
The project is advancing towards a mine-scale open pit configuration, supported by the shallow nature of much of the resource and the extensive strike length of approximately 4 kilometres. Southern Hemisphere's chairman highlighted the potential for higher-grade mineralization at depth, which will be tested in upcoming drilling programs.
Strategic Location and Infrastructure
Located in the Coquimbo Region of Chile, the Llahuin Project benefits from proximity to key infrastructure, including roads, electricity grid access, and nearby ports. The project area is not in a critical water-vulnerable zone, and water has been intersected in all drill holes, mitigating a common risk for mining operations in semi-arid regions.
The joint venture with FMR Resources for the Curiosity-Southern Porphyry Target, backed by the Creasy Group, marks a strategic step to unlock deeper mineralization and enhance project value.
Looking Ahead
Southern Hemisphere Mining plans to commence drilling of the Curiosity-Southern Porphyry Target in Q4 2025, aiming to test the deeper potential of the system. The company also anticipates ongoing infill and extensional drilling to convert Exploration Targets into JORC-compliant resources, progressively advancing the project towards feasibility and development.
Bottom Line?
With a robust resource base and promising exploration targets, Southern Hemisphere Mining’s Llahuin Project is poised for significant growth as it moves towards development.
