International Graphite Limited (ASX, IG6) has taken a significant step forward in its commercial ambitions by settling the purchase of three industrial lots in the Collie Light Industrial Area, Western Australia. This 6,000 square metre parcel sits directly opposite the company’s existing research and development facility, which houses Australia’s first pilot graphite micronising plant.

The acquisition aligns closely with the capital cost estimates outlined in the company’s earlier Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study, underscoring disciplined project execution. The land purchase from DevelopmentWA, the state government’s central development agency, signals strong public-private collaboration aimed at fostering industrial growth in the region.

Advancing Facility Development

With the land secured, International Graphite is now finalizing detailed designs for the new commercial micronising facility. Major plant and equipment orders have already been placed, reflecting confidence in the project’s progression. Meanwhile, Western Power has approved the essential power supply, and the development application is in its final stages with the Shire of Collie.

Once approved, construction can commence, marking a pivotal transition from pilot operations to full-scale commercial production. This facility aims to address growing global demand for graphite, a critical mineral in battery manufacturing and other advanced technologies, especially as manufacturers seek reliable alternatives to overseas supply chains.

Government Support and Regional Growth

The Western Australian Government has played a crucial role in supporting International Graphite’s development, providing a $12.5 million grant package over the past three years to advance the Collie and Springdale projects. Collie itself is designated as a WA Super Town, earmarked for significant industrial expansion and economic diversification.

Recent industrial developments in Collie, including a pilot magnesium plant and plans for a low emissions steel mill, position the town as a burgeoning hub for advanced manufacturing. International Graphite’s facility is among the first to establish a foothold in this revitalized industrial precinct, promising to generate value well beyond the initial capital investment.

Managing Director Andrew Worland highlighted the strategic timing of the Collie Micronising Facility, noting strong interest from manufacturers seeking dependable graphite supply alternatives amid global uncertainties.
