Construction Milestone Reached
Galan Lithium Limited (ASX: GLN) has announced that construction of Phase 1 at its Hombre Muerto West (HMW) lithium project in Argentina is now about 92% complete. This marks a significant step forward for the company as it moves closer to becoming a lithium producer in one of the world’s most prolific lithium regions, the so-called Lithium Triangle.
The nanofiltration plant, a key component of the processing infrastructure, is being assembled on an accelerated timeline and is progressing according to plan. With over 25 personnel on site, the structural, mechanical, and electrical installations are advancing rapidly, supported by a strong technical partnership with Authium, the company’s offtake and operating agreement partner since April 2025.
From Construction to Commissioning
Following the near completion of construction, Galan is preparing to transition into formal testing and commissioning phases. This will include rigorous electrical, pressure, and pump tests to ensure the plant’s operational readiness. Once these tests are successfully completed, commissioning with raw brine will commence, leveraging the substantial brine inventory already accumulated in evaporation ponds.
The nanofiltration plant is designed with flexibility in mind, capable of supporting production beyond the initial Phase 1 target of 5,200 tonnes per annum of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE). This positions Galan well for potential scale-up in future phases.
Production and Market Outlook
Galan’s Managing Director, Juan Pablo Vargas de la Vega, expressed confidence in the project’s progress, highlighting that first processed brine is expected in early Q2 2026, with the first lithium chloride concentrate shipment anticipated in the first half of 2026. This timeline aligns with the company’s broader strategy to establish itself as a low-cost, high-purity lithium producer.
HMW boasts one of the largest and purest lithium brine resources in Argentina, with a mineral resource inventory placing it among the top 10 lithium projects globally. The project benefits from Argentina’s RIGI framework, which offers fiscal stability and tax incentives, further enhancing its cost competitiveness.
Strategic Positioning and Future Potential
Beyond Phase 1, Galan holds permits to expand production at HMW up to 21,000 tonnes per annum LCE, with potential further expansions to 60,000 tonnes per annum in later phases. The company also maintains exploration licences near the Greenbushes lithium mine in Western Australia, underscoring its broader ambitions in the lithium sector.
