Environmental Clearance Clears Path for ADX’s Welchau Resource Development

Context and Significance

ADX Energy Ltd (ASX:ADX) has delivered a substantial upgrade to its prospective gas-condensate and light oil resources at the Welchau well, located in Austria’s Upper Austria licence area. The announcement follows extensive drilling and testing activities conducted in 2024, which have confirmed the presence of multiple overpressured fractured carbonate reservoirs containing both gas and light oil.

This update is particularly timely as Austria continues to rely heavily on imported gas, positioning ADX’s discoveries as strategically important for regional energy security. The Welchau-1 well results suggest a potentially large and economically significant resource base that could contribute to reducing this dependence.

Key Findings from Welchau-1 Well

The Welchau-1 well, drilled and tested in 2024, encountered four primary fractured carbonate reservoirs between depths of 1281 and 1731 metres. Testing confirmed gas flow rates and the presence of light oil with an API gravity of 43.6°, indicating high-quality hydrocarbons. Notably, the well intersected a significant light oil accumulation in the Reifling Formation, with oil contacts mapped approximately 500 metres updip from the well location.

Pressure and structural data demonstrate continuity between the Welchau-1 well and the nearby Molln-1 gas-condensate discovery, suggesting an extensive interconnected petroleum system. However, the original condensate target has not yet been reached, and the well remains suspended pending further deepening to fully appraise the resource potential.

Environmental and Regulatory Developments

Testing activities faced interruptions in early 2025 due to environmental objections from non-governmental organisations. These issues have since been resolved following a ruling by the Austrian Administrative Court, allowing ADX to resume testing and appraisal operations. This clearance is a critical milestone, enabling the company to advance its understanding of the reservoir and move closer to defining commercial viability.

Outlook and Next Steps

ADX’s Executive Chairman, Ian Tchacos, expressed optimism about the results, highlighting the well’s overpressured reservoir conditions and multiple petroleum sources as positive indicators. The company plans to deepen the Welchau-1 well to access deeper targets and continue fluid sampling and pressure monitoring.
