Argosy Minerals Achieves 96% Lithium Recovery, Boosts Rincon Project Momentum

Mining By Maxwell Dee 3 min read

Argosy Minerals reports a 96% lithium recovery from test works at its Rincon Lithium Project and progresses critical energy infrastructure, moving closer to a final investment decision.

  • 96% lithium recovery achieved in process test works
  • High purity lithium chloride concentrate successfully produced
  • Two-stage product development pathway focusing initially on lithium chloride
  • Lycopodium engaged to advance 40MW energy infrastructure project
  • Feasibility studies nearing completion, de-risking project for investment

Strong Process Validation Bolsters Rincon Project

Argosy Minerals Limited (ASX: AGY) has delivered encouraging progress on its 12,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) Rincon Lithium Project in Argentina’s Salta Province. The company announced that recent process technology test works have achieved a lithium recovery rate of 96%, producing a high purity lithium chloride concentrate. This milestone validates the robustness of the process flowsheet and underpins confidence in the project’s technical foundation.

The test works, conducted in collaboration with international lithium process consultants, have advanced to continuous pilot plant operations in Argentina. This stage aims to further demonstrate process performance and refine key operating and economic parameters ahead of the final feasibility report. Successful completion will enable Argosy to sharpen project execution schedules and cost estimates.

Two-Stage Product Strategy Enhances Flexibility

Argosy is pursuing a two-stage product development pathway. Stage 1a focuses on producing solid lithium chloride on-site as an intermediate product. This approach offers several strategic advantages, including lower upfront capital expenditure, faster market entry, and alignment with growing demand for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. Stage 1b contemplates converting lithium chloride into battery quality lithium carbonate or hydroxide, subject to further feasibility studies.

By initially producing lithium chloride, Argosy aims to reduce operational complexity and technical risk while maintaining versatility to pursue various downstream refining options or export opportunities. This modular development strategy positions the project to respond agilely to evolving market conditions and customer requirements.

Energy Infrastructure Advances De-Risk Project

Complementing the process advancements, Argosy has engaged Lycopodium as Owner’s Electrical Engineer to progress the design and construction of a 40MW energy infrastructure solution. This includes an 8.6-kilometre medium voltage transmission line connecting the Rincon site to the 500kV Argentina National Grid via a local substation adjacent to the Altiplano Solar Facility.

This stable and sustainable power supply is critical to underpinning long-term operations and represents a significant milestone in de-risking the project. The energy infrastructure progress supports Argosy’s pathway toward a positive final investment decision (FID) and commercialisation.

Outlook and Next Steps

Argosy’s Managing Director Jerko Zuvela emphasised the importance of these developments, highlighting the strong momentum gained from successful test works and infrastructure progress. The company is focused on completing the feasibility report and targeting FID, which will be pivotal in advancing the Rincon Lithium Project toward full-scale development.

While the current focus remains on lithium chloride production, further feasibility work will determine the viability of downstream processing to battery quality products or direct export strategies. Investors will be watching closely for the final feasibility outcomes and any updates on project financing and timelines.

Bottom Line?

With process validation and energy infrastructure advancing, Argosy is poised to make a decisive move toward Rincon’s commercialisation.
