Rimfire’s Rabbit Trap Project Faces Critical Option Decision Amid Scandium Breakthrough

Mining By Maxwell Dee 3 min read

Rimfire Pacific Mining’s latest drilling confirms significant scandium mineralisation at the Malamute Prospect within the Rabbit Trap Project, underpinning a strategic acquisition decision.

  • December 2025 air core drilling validates historic scandium intercepts
  • Multiple strong scandium grades over thick laterite zones up to 44m
  • Mineralisation extends over 600m x 400m area and remains open laterally
  • Exclusive option to acquire 100% of EL8666 by April 30, 2026
  • Further drilling planned to define resource and expand scandium inventory

Drilling Success at Malamute

Rimfire Pacific Mining has delivered a significant boost to its scandium ambitions with the release of results from its December 2025 air core drilling program at the Malamute Scandium Prospect, part of the Rabbit Trap Project in central New South Wales. The program successfully validated and expanded on historic drill intercepts, revealing multiple strong scandium grades within a flat-lying laterite zone up to 44 metres thick.

Noteworthy intercepts include 30 metres at 247 parts per million (ppm) scandium from 25 metres depth, including a high-grade 16-metre section at 352 ppm. Other substantial intervals were recorded, such as 33 metres at 177 ppm and 44 metres at 175 ppm scandium, underscoring the prospect’s robust mineralisation profile.

Expanding the Scandium Footprint

The mineralised zone covers an area of approximately 600 by 400 metres and remains open to the north and east, suggesting considerable potential for resource growth. The scandium mineralisation extends beyond the boundaries of the underlying magnetic anomaly, a key observation that points to further exploration upside across adjacent magnetic targets within a one-kilometre radius.

Rimfire’s Managing Director, David Hutton, emphasised the importance of these findings, stating that the results confirm Rabbit Trap as a significant scandium opportunity. He highlighted the company’s confidence in expanding the mineralised zone with further drilling, aiming to progress towards a formal mineral resource estimate.

Strategic Acquisition on the Horizon

Central to Rimfire’s strategy is its exclusive option to acquire 100% of exploration licence EL8666, which hosts the Malamute Prospect. The option requires a payment of $125,000 to Javelin Minerals by 30 April 2026, payable in cash or shares at Rimfire’s discretion. This acquisition would consolidate Rimfire’s control over the Rabbit Trap Project and enhance its portfolio of critical mineral assets.

The company is currently reviewing the latest drilling results alongside technical assessments to determine the merits of exercising this option. The decision will be pivotal in shaping Rimfire’s scandium resource development pathway.

Looking Ahead

Beyond Malamute, Rimfire also drilled several regional magnetic anomalies with mixed results, encountering thick cover sequences that limited basement penetration in some areas. These anomalies remain prospective and may warrant alternative drilling techniques in future campaigns.

With scandium increasingly recognised for its critical role in advanced technologies and clean energy applications, Rimfire’s expanding resource inventory in the Fifield District positions it well within a growing market. The company’s next steps will focus on further drilling to delineate the full extent of mineralisation and advancing the Rabbit Trap Project towards resource definition.

Bottom Line?

Rimfire’s upcoming decision on the EL8666 option and further drilling results will be key to unlocking the full potential of this emerging scandium asset.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will Rimfire exercise its option to acquire EL8666 and secure full ownership of Malamute?
  • How extensive is the scandium mineralisation beyond the current drilling footprint?
  • What are the economic implications of the scandium grades and thicknesses for future resource development?
