Parkinson Dam Delays Threaten Tasman’s South Australian Exploration Momentum

Mining By Maxwell Dee 3 min read

Tasman Resources reports progress on drilling preparations at its South Australian projects, with Fortescue-led heritage surveys set to unlock Titan West drilling this year, while Parkinson Dam faces scheduling delays.

  • Fortescue plans Aboriginal heritage clearance surveys at Titan West in late March to early April 2026
  • Drilling at Titan West expected to commence by June or July, pending survey outcomes
  • Magnetotelluric survey reveals deep conductive body consistent with sulfide-rich IOCG mineralisation
  • Parkinson Dam drilling delayed due to backlog in heritage clearance scheduling
  • Six untested targets identified at Parkinson Dam requiring clearance before drilling

Heritage Surveys Pave Way for Titan West Drilling

Tasman Resources Ltd (ASX:TAS) has provided a significant update on its exploration activities at two key South Australian projects, Titan West and Parkinson Dam. The company’s joint venture partner, Fortescue Ltd (ASX:FMG), is advancing preparations for drilling at Titan West by arranging Aboriginal heritage clearance surveys scheduled for late March to early April 2026. These surveys, conducted by the Arabana and Kokatha Aboriginal Corporations, are a critical prerequisite before drilling can commence.

Fortescue currently holds a 51% interest in the Lake Torrens IOCG project, with the option to increase its stake to 80% by sole funding $11 million. The heritage clearance is a vital step to ensure cultural and environmental sensitivities are respected, and if no issues arise, drilling is anticipated to begin by mid-year.

Promising Geophysical Signals at Titan West

Underlying the drilling plans is encouraging geophysical data. A Magnetotelluric (MT) survey conducted in 2025 identified a deep conductive body extending up to 2-3 kilometres below the surface, spatially correlated with a dense gravity anomaly. This co-location suggests the presence of a sulfide-rich lithology, a hallmark of Iron-Oxide Copper-Gold (IOCG) deposits, which are highly sought after for their economic potential.

The MT survey’s findings build on historical drilling, which has so far been limited, with only one hole drilled at Titan West in 1981. The new data provides a compelling case for renewed exploration, potentially unlocking significant mineral resources in a region known for its rich deposits, including the nearby Olympic Dam.

Parkinson Dam Faces Heritage Clearance Delays

Meanwhile, progress at the Parkinson Dam project is encountering delays. Tasman applied for heritage clearance with the Barngarla Determination Aboriginal Corporation in November 2025, a necessary step before drilling can begin on six identified targets spanning epithermal, IOCG, and porphyry styles. However, due to a heavy workload managing multiple mineral and clean energy project applications, the clearance survey has yet to be scheduled and may take up to three months.

This delay pushes back the timeline for drilling at Parkinson Dam, where none of the targets have been previously tested. The targets were identified through advanced geophysical reviews, including proprietary Automatic Curve Matching technology, underscoring the project's exploration potential despite the current hold-up.

Looking Ahead

Tasman’s updates highlight the complex interplay between exploration ambition and regulatory, cultural, and environmental considerations. While Titan West appears poised to move into an active drilling phase soon, Parkinson Dam’s progress hinges on the timely completion of heritage surveys. Investors and observers will be watching closely for the outcomes of these surveys and the subsequent drilling results, which could materially impact Tasman’s resource prospects and joint venture dynamics.

Bottom Line?

Tasman’s drilling ambitions hinge on heritage clearances, with Titan West advancing swiftly while Parkinson Dam awaits its turn.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will Fortescue increase its joint venture interest to 80% by sole funding the drilling?
  • What specific mineralisation might the deep conductive body at Titan West reveal once drilled?
  • How will delays in heritage clearance at Parkinson Dam affect Tasman’s overall exploration timeline and capital allocation?
