Rare Earth Collaboration Targets Low-Cost ISR Production

Brazilian Critical Minerals (ASX:BCM) has entered non-binding talks with Southern Alliance Mining (SGX: QNS) to explore synergies in rare earth production using in-situ recovery (ISR) techniques. The agreement sets a framework for the companies to evaluate joint commercial and technical opportunities, including potential offtake arrangements and operational cooperation.

Southern Alliance Mining holds a 40% stake in MCRE Resources, which operates the Gerik mine in Malaysia; one of the world’s largest ISR rare earth operations. Since commencing in 2023, MCRE has extracted over 20,000 tonnes of mixed rare earth carbonate using ISR, a method noted for its lower environmental impact and cost compared to traditional open-pit mining.

BCM’s Ema Project Poised for ISR Innovation

BCM’s Managing Director Andrew Reid highlighted the significance of applying ISR technology to the Ema project in Brazil, describing it as the "next evolution" in bringing a low-cost, low-impact extraction model into a Western supply chain. The Ema project boasts an indicated and inferred mineral resource of 943 million tonnes at 716 ppm total rare earth oxides (TREO), with metallurgical recoveries averaging 68% MREO; among the highest globally for ionic clay deposits.

BCM is progressing a bankable feasibility study due in Q2 2026 and has recently confirmed resource continuity through extensive drilling, reinforcing the project’s scale and grade. This collaboration with Southern Alliance Mining aims to leverage MCRE’s operational expertise to refine ISR practices and commercialise rare earth products efficiently.

Strategic Partnership Scope and Industry Implications

The agreement outlines objectives including information exchange, assessment of joint commercial opportunities, and evaluation of potential joint ventures or partnerships. Southern Alliance’s Managing Director Dato’ Sri Pek Kok Sam emphasised the value of combining operational experience to meet growing global demand for critical materials.

This partnership also aligns with BCM’s recent progress, including a continuous high-grade rare earth mineralisation update that bolstered confidence ahead of its feasibility study. Both companies are positioning themselves within a rare earth sector increasingly focused on sustainable extraction methods and supply chain diversification.

While the collaboration remains non-binding and exploratory, it signals a strategic move towards scaling ISR rare earth production outside Asia, potentially reshaping cost structures and supply dynamics in the critical minerals market.

Bottom Line?

BCM’s partnership with Southern Alliance Mining could accelerate the commercialisation of low-cost ISR rare earths, but concrete outcomes hinge on feasibility results and regulatory progress.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will the collaboration lead to a binding offtake agreement or joint venture?
  • How will BCM’s Ema project navigate permitting and regulatory hurdles in Brazil?
  • What impact could expanded ISR rare earth supply have on global market pricing?
