Meteoric Advances Caldeira with Pilot Plant Output and $50M Export Finance Support

Mining By Maxwell Dee 5 min read

Meteoric Resources has reported strong pilot plant performance and advanced feasibility work at its Caldeira rare earths project, alongside a $50 million non-binding financing letter from Export Finance Australia and robust Brazilian government backing.

  • Pilot plant exceeds 2kg/day MREC production with 70% magnet rare earth recovery
  • Installation Licence application submitted, progressing regulatory approvals
  • Definitive Feasibility Study 82% complete with engineering and mining models advanced
  • US$50 million conditional financing support from Export Finance Australia
  • $58 million proforma cash after $40 million placement in April

Pilot Plant Performance Surpasses Expectations

Meteoric Resources NL (ASX:MEI) has reported that its Caldeira pilot plant is operating at or above nameplate capacity, producing over 2.0 kilograms per day of Mixed Rare Earth Carbonate (MREC) with an average 70% recovery of magnet rare earth elements (MRE). Notably, heavy rare earth recoveries such as dysprosium and terbium have exceeded prior independent ANSTO benchmarks, hitting 56% and 61% respectively, compared to ANSTO's 49% and 57% results. The pilot plant also demonstrates strong process sustainability by recycling approximately 85% of water and 90% of ammonium sulfate used in production.

This robust pilot plant output not only validates Meteoric’s processing flowsheet but also provides critical MREC samples to potential offtake partners and strategic investors. The company plans to continue optimisation trials and broaden feedstock testing to include additional tenements beyond the current resource base, such as Dona Maria 1 & 2 and Cupim Vermelho Norte. These developments build on the momentum from the company's pilot plant production capacity reached earlier this year.

Regulatory Milestone with Installation Licence Submission

Following the granting of the Preliminary Environmental Licence in December 2025, Meteoric has submitted its Installation Licence (LI) application to the Minas Gerais State Environmental Foundation (FEAM). This represents the second of three critical environmental approvals required before full-scale production can commence. The LI application integrates comprehensive environmental and social impact studies, engineering designs, and compliance with socio-environmental conditions established in the preliminary licence.

The submission marks significant progress in Meteoric’s regulatory pathway and is supported by a dedicated team of environmental, social, geological, and engineering experts. The company expects FEAM’s review to proceed smoothly, advancing Caldeira closer to construction readiness.

Definitive Feasibility Study Nears Completion

Meteoric’s Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) for Caldeira is now 82% complete, with engineering workstreams incorporating pilot plant data and vendor testwork to de-risk the project. Major equipment selections have been finalised through competitive tenders, and detailed design has progressed to enable accurate bulk quantity estimates for construction materials. Constructability reviews with potential contractors are underway ahead of detailed cost estimates expected next quarter.

Mining models have been updated with recent drilling results, including 194 aircore and 44 hollow stem auger holes, totalling more than 7,200 metres and over 4,000 samples. This drilling supports an anticipated upgrade of resources from Indicated and Inferred to Measured and Indicated categories, enhancing confidence in the ore reserve. The updated geological models are undergoing final quality assurance checks before public release.

Strong Government and Industry Support Bolsters Project

Caldeira continues to receive high-level backing from the Brazilian Government. Meteoric’s Executive Director Dr Marcelo De Carvalho recently met with Brazilian Vice-President Dr Geraldo Alckmin to discuss the strategic importance of rare earths in developing Brazil’s critical minerals supply chain. During this meeting, MREC samples from the pilot plant were presented to Dr Alckmin, symbolising government endorsement of the project’s downstream processing potential.

In March, Minas Gerais Governor Romeu Zema visited the pilot plant alongside local officials, reinforcing regional support for Caldeira’s development. This visit complements the recent delivery of a 10-kilogram bulk MREC sample to MagBras, a Brazilian initiative aimed at creating a domestic rare earth magnet supply chain. The collaboration with MagBras is part of Meteoric’s strategy to foster local downstream processing capabilities and reduce Brazil’s reliance on imports.

Financing Advances with $50 Million Letter of Support

Meteoric has secured a non-binding, conditional Letter of Support from Export Finance Australia (EFA) for indicative financing of up to US$50 million (approximately A$77 million). This funding is intended to support Caldeira’s development using Australian engineering, procurement, and construction contractors, strengthening Australia-Brazil supply chain ties. The EFA support complements a prior US$250 million letter of interest from the United States Export Import Bank and ongoing discussions with the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) and other strategic investors.

This financial backing underscores international confidence in Caldeira’s potential and aligns with broader efforts to diversify global rare earth supply chains. Meteoric’s recent $40M placement to propel Caldeira further bolsters its cash position to a proforma $58 million, providing runway to advance towards a Final Investment Decision.

Financial Position and Future Funding Strategy

At quarter-end, Meteoric held $18 million in cash, with operating outflows averaging approximately $1.4 million per month and DFS-related expenditures around $1.3 million monthly. The company also incurred $1.2 million in land purchase instalments for environmental conservation. With the recent capital raise, Meteoric is well capitalised to progress project milestones but continues to explore additional funding avenues including government grants, strategic partnerships, and offtake agreements to support operations through to production.

Bottom Line?

Meteoric’s Caldeira project is advancing steadily with strong pilot plant validation, regulatory progress, and promising financing signals, but key feasibility and licensing outcomes remain to be finalised.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will the Installation Licence be granted on schedule to maintain Caldeira’s development timeline?
  • How will Meteoric’s pilot plant optimisation impact commercial-scale processing design and costs?
  • What terms will final financing and offtake agreements take, and how might they affect project economics?
