- Framework supports commercial development and potential joint ventures
- Focus on multi-species cultivation including Caulerpa and Ulva
- Four-year term with separate agreements to define specific projects
Strategic Partnership to Scale Indonesian Seaweed Operations
BPH Global Ltd (ASX:BP8) has taken a significant step in operationalising its Indonesian seaweed ambitions by signing a binding Memorandum of Understanding with the Maritime Institute of Technology and Business (ITBM) in Makassar. This four-year framework agreement aims to embed ITBM students into the cultivation, processing, and research activities at BPH’s recently secured 3.4-hectare coastal site in Takalar Regency, South Sulawesi, creating a scalable, locally aligned workforce model.
Managing Director Matthew Leonard highlighted the importance of this collaboration, noting that student engagement will form the initial operational foundation under the supervision of BPH’s newly appointed Chief Scientific Officer. This approach not only supports day-to-day operations but also integrates research capabilities directly within the commercial project, potentially accelerating innovation and operational efficiency.
Operational Focus on Multi-Species Seaweed Cultivation
The Takalar site, located about 40–50 km south of Makassar, is being developed as a vertically integrated seaweed cultivation and processing hub. It focuses on sea grape (Caulerpa) and multi-species tank cultivation, including Ulva species, alongside infrastructure for processing, drying, and downstream product development targeting food, nutraceutical, and agricultural markets. This development builds on BPH’s recent site acquisition and lease arrangements, underpinning its broader expansion strategy in Indonesia’s aquaculture sector.
Initial student roles will encompass internships and applied research placements, supporting pond maintenance, harvesting, processing, and R&D activities. This hands-on involvement aims to foster human resource development while strengthening operational execution capability in the region. The MoU also opens doors for broader commercial collaborations, including project-level participation and co-investment opportunities, though these will be formalised through separate agreements.
Framework Agreement Balances Flexibility and Long-Term Vision
The MoU acts as a non-exclusive, overarching framework, with specific commercial terms, funding, and governance to be negotiated on a project-by-project basis. Intellectual property generated under the collaboration will be owned by BPH’s Indonesian subsidiary, ensuring control over innovations emerging from the partnership. The agreement’s four-year term provides a stable horizon for operational and commercial development while allowing periodic evaluation and adjustment.
This initiative complements BPH Global’s ongoing efforts to enhance its Indonesian footprint, following the securing of the Takalar coastal site and its progress in seaweed product innovation, including the recent Stage 2 collaboration with BRIN on fucoidan supplements. The integration of academic partnerships into operational models reflects a strategic approach to combining research, workforce development, and commercial scaling in a challenging but promising aquaculture market.
Bottom Line?
BPH Global’s MoU with ITBM lays a foundation for scalable, research-integrated seaweed cultivation in Indonesia, with commercial details and impact to crystallise as project agreements unfold.
