Great Northern Minerals Expands Iron Butte Project with 46 New Claims in Nevada

Mining By Maxwell Dee 3 min read

Great Northern Minerals has significantly enlarged its Iron Butte Gold-Silver Project in Nevada by staking 46 additional lode claims covering around 950 acres. The new ground shows promising geological and geochemical signatures, setting the stage for imminent resource estimation and drilling.

  • 46 new lode claims added to Iron Butte
  • Strong gold-silver soil anomalies over wide areas
  • Claims located within Battle Mountain mineral corridor
  • Maiden JORC Mineral Resource expected imminently
  • Geophysical review advancing to prioritise drill targets

Significant Expansion of Iron Butte Footprint

Great Northern Minerals Limited (ASX:GNM) has boosted the scale of its Iron Butte Gold-Silver Project in Nevada by staking 46 new lode claims, adding approximately 950 acres to its landholding. This expansion nearly doubles the project footprint within the highly prospective Battle Mountain district, a world-renowned gold corridor. The newly acquired claims are split between the Caetano Rim and Valmy areas, both showing geological and alteration characteristics akin to the known mineralised zones at Iron Butte and other major Nevada gold deposits.

Compelling Soil Geochemistry Supports Exploration Upside

A review of historical soil sampling, conducted by Angold in 2021 and 2022, revealed strong gold and silver anomalies across the new claim areas. Assays reached up to 179 parts per billion (ppb) gold and 3.8 parts per million (ppm) silver over strike lengths up to 1 kilometre, highlighting extensive mineralisation at surface. The Caetano Rim claims, adjacent to the Caetano Caldera rim known for hosting major deposits like the Cortez Gold mine, exhibit elevated gold and silver soil values over an 850 by 300 metre zone within structurally complex volcanic tuff. Meanwhile, the Valmy claims show similarly encouraging geochemical signatures over a 1 kilometre by 300 metre area within Ordovician-aged sedimentary rocks, a setting analogous to other gold deposits in the district.

Advancing Geophysical Review and Resource Estimation

The company is well advanced in reprocessing historical geophysical datasets, including magnetotelluric and induced polarisation surveys, to refine and prioritise drill targets across the expanded project area. An initial surface sampling program across the new claims will follow the geophysical review to validate these targets ahead of GNM’s maiden drilling campaign. Importantly, compilation and validation of all historical and recent data to support a maiden Inferred JORC-compliant Mineral Resource estimate for Iron Butte is now complete, with the company anticipating its release imminently. This milestone represents a significant de-risking step for the project and could provide a clearer valuation anchor for investors.

These developments build on the company’s earlier identification of two new drill targets outside the existing resource footprint, supported by strong surface mineralisation and geological continuity two new drill targets. The expanded landholding and integrated exploration strategy position GNM to systematically explore extensions of the mineralised system.

Strategic Positioning Within Battle Mountain District

Iron Butte sits approximately 60 kilometres south of Battle Mountain within the Battle Mountain–Cortez Gold Trend, one of Nevada’s prolific gold belts alongside the Carlin and Getchell trends. The newly staked claims at Caetano Rim and Valmy lie within structural corridors and geological units that host significant gold-silver deposits, enhancing the project's prospectivity. The Caetano Caldera's rim, in particular, is a well-endowed geological feature with several major gold mines, including the Cortez deposit, underscoring the potential scale of mineralisation that GNM may be tapping into.

GNM’s approach, incorporating historical data with modern geophysical techniques and systematic surface sampling, aligns with best practice exploration in Nevada’s complex epithermal and Carlin-style gold systems. The company’s recent financial strengthening, including cash reserves bolstered by divestments, supports ongoing work programs and contractor engagement ahead of drilling cash reserves boost.

Bottom Line?

The expanded Iron Butte land package and imminent maiden resource estimate mark a pivotal phase for Great Northern Minerals, but final claim tenure confirmation and drilling results will be critical next steps.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will the maiden JORC resource confirm the scale suggested by surface geochemistry?
  • How quickly can GNM progress from geophysical targets to drilling and assay results?
  • What impact will BLM’s final claim confirmations have on project timelines and security?
