Petro Vietnam Paint Commits to Sparc’s ecosparc® Additive

Vietnamese coatings manufacturer Petro Vietnam Paint (PV PAINT) has taken a significant step by agreeing to commercialise Sparc Technologies’ ecosparc® graphene additive within its PERAPHENE range of protective coatings. This marks the first international product suite to incorporate ecosparc®, following successful internal and independent testing that demonstrated enhanced anticorrosion properties compared to other graphene materials.

PERAPHENE Range Designed for Harsh Corrosive Environments

The PERAPHENE coatings are engineered for steel applications exposed to highly corrosive conditions, including marine, offshore, industrial, and infrastructure sectors. PV PAINT’s testing confirmed that ecosparc®-enhanced coatings meet the demanding C5-High corrosivity standard under ISO 12944-6 at lower dry film thicknesses than comparable products, potentially offering cost and performance advantages.

PV PAINT’s General Director, Vũ Duy Cường, highlighted the company's innovation-driven approach and rigorous evaluation of global graphene additives, concluding that ecosparc® currently best balances performance and cost-effectiveness. Ongoing trials aim to validate performance under even tougher conditions such as C5 Very High, CX, offshore, and immersion environments.

Commercial Availability and Market Implications

Commercial launch of the PERAPHENE range with ecosparc® is anticipated in Q3 2026. While the agreement does not include binding purchase commitments, it represents a meaningful milestone for Sparc in expanding its international footprint. Sparc’s Managing Director Nick O’Loughlin noted this development builds on the earlier Australian commercialisation of ecosparc® in AkzoNobel’s Interzone® 954 product, reinforcing Sparc’s leadership in graphene additives for protective coatings.

With the global protective and marine coatings market valued at approximately US$33 billion, Sparc estimates the addressable market for ecosparc® at around US$1 billion annually. This calculation considers the proportion of coatings suited to ecosparc® and projected selling prices by 2030. However, Sparc cautions that market acceptance, manufacturing capacity, and regulatory hurdles remain key factors influencing revenue potential.

Strategic Collaboration and Future Prospects

Discussions between Sparc and PV PAINT began in late 2024, followed by collaborative laboratory testing across multiple coating systems. Independent laboratory validations have bolstered confidence in ecosparc®’s suitability for demanding corrosion protection applications. Sparc continues to engage with global coatings manufacturers and asset owners, targeting sectors like government, defence, mining, and oil and gas for further field trials and commercial partnerships.

This international commercialisation milestone complements Sparc’s broader efforts, including recent collaborations to develop AI-driven corrosion testing software and advances in green hydrogen production technology. The company’s strategic positioning in both graphene additives and sustainable energy underscores its ambition to enhance environmental outcomes across industries.

Bottom Line?

The PV PAINT partnership signals Sparc’s ecosparc® is gaining traction beyond Australia, but commercial success hinges on market uptake and scaling production.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will PV PAINT’s PERAPHENE range achieve meaningful market penetration in Southeast Asia and beyond?
  • How will ecosparc® perform under more extreme corrosive conditions in ongoing PV PAINT trials?
  • Can Sparc replicate this international commercialisation momentum with other coatings manufacturers?
