Premium Rutile Concentrate Validates Mkanda Potential

Fortuna Metals Limited (ASX:FUN) has achieved a standout milestone at its Mkanda rutile and graphite project in Malawi, producing a rutile concentrate grading over 96% titanium dioxide (TiO2) from initial bulk metallurgical test work. The 5.4 tonne bulk sample, processed through multi-stage gravity, magnetic, and electrostatic separation by Mineral Technologies in Johannesburg, delivered a rutile product that stacks up well against established global producers such as Sovereign Metals’ Kasiya and Leonoil’s Sierra Rutile.

Chief Executive Tom Langley highlighted the significance of the result, noting it underscores the high quality and low impurity profile of Mkanda’s rutile. Fortuna plans to engage potential customers soon to verify the product’s suitability for downstream applications, a critical step toward commercialisation.

Drilling Advances Resource Definition with Maiden Estimate Imminent

Fortuna has aggressively advanced its exploration program with over 1,300 hand auger drill holes completed across Mkanda, covering more than 10,000 metres at an average depth of around 8 metres. This extensive drilling campaign aims to delineate large zones of rutile, graphite, and rare earth mineralisation, with a maiden inferred Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) expected in July 2026.

The 2026 drilling strategy has intensified to a 200m by 200m spacing to improve resource confidence, supported by a planned 5,000m aircore program continuing through the third quarter. The project’s geological setting closely mirrors that of the nearby Kasiya deposit, the world’s largest rutile and second-largest flake graphite resource, just 20km north of Mkanda.

Multi-Commodity Focus with Graphite and Rare Earths in Play

Beyond rutile, Fortuna is progressing analysis of monazite, zircon, and graphite samples, with graphite flotation test work slated for Q3 2026. The proximity to Kasiya, which recently identified strategic heavy rare earth mineralisation, adds a compelling dimension to Fortuna’s multi-commodity approach. The company’s commissioning of an in-country laboratory in Lilongwe aims to accelerate assay turnaround and reduce costs, enabling more responsive drilling and resource modelling.

Strategic Location and Infrastructure Advantages

Fortuna’s Mkanda and Kampini projects benefit from excellent infrastructure, situated within 20km of Malawi’s capital Lilongwe, close to rail access linking to the deep-water port at Nacala in Mozambique, and near high-capacity power lines and abundant fresh water. This logistical advantage could be pivotal in future processing and export phases.

Rutile’s Rising Profile Amid Supply Constraints

Rutile, a critical mineral and primary feedstock for titanium pigment and metal production, is increasingly in demand, particularly in advanced manufacturing and robotics where titanium’s lightweight strength is prized. With traditional rutile deposits declining globally, supply is tightening, positioning Mkanda as a potentially important new source. Current rutile prices hover around US$1,100 to US$1,300 per tonne, underscoring the commodity’s value.
