Updated Biodiversity Assessment Clears Path for Bowdens Redetermination

Silver Mines Limited (ASX:SVL) has taken a significant step forward in advancing its Bowdens Silver Project by submitting an updated Biodiversity Development Assessment Report (BDAR) to the NSW Department of Planning Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI). This follows a strategic decision late last year to refresh ecological surveys and meet the requirements of the Biodiversity and Conservation Act 2016, addressing a Request for Information (RFI) from the regulator.

The updated submission now enables DPHI to prepare a revised assessment report for the Independent Planning Commission of NSW (IPC), which will consider the development application’s redetermination. This procedural milestone is crucial for Silver Mines as it seeks to reinstate development consent for what it describes as a high-quality critical minerals project.

Project Significance and Employment Impact

Managing Director Jo Battershill emphasised the importance of this milestone, highlighting that the refreshed ecological data provided a clearer pathway through the regulatory process. The Bowdens Project, located near Mudgee in central New South Wales, is the largest undeveloped silver deposit in Australia and carries substantial regional significance.

Beyond its mineral potential, Bowdens is projected to be a major local employer, generating over 300 jobs during construction and sustaining more than 200 roles in steady-state operations. This level of employment would position the mine as one of the district’s largest employers, underlining its economic importance to the region.

Silver Mines also revealed that its Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) for Bowdens is nearing completion, with results expected to be shared with investors in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, the company continues extensive consultations with government departments, local communities, and other stakeholders throughout the assessment and redetermination period, reflecting the complexities of advancing a large-scale mining development in a sensitive environmental and social context.

The Bowdens Project covers a substantial landholding of over 2,100 square kilometres, encompassing a variety of mineralisation styles including silver, lead, zinc, copper, and gold. Its location within the Rylstone Volcanics and proximity to infrastructure enhances its development appeal.

Silver Mines’ recent moves, including securing additional land and water rights, have bolstered the project’s foundation ahead of the DFS completion.
