Powerhouse to Boost Reliability and Cut Emissions at Orbost
Synertec Corporation Limited (ASX:SOP) has secured a pivotal role in modernising Victoria’s Orbost Gas Processing Plant through its Powerhouse energy platform. Selected by Amplitude Energy Limited (ASX:AEL) following a competitive tender, Synertec will lead a power optimisation project designed to enhance plant reliability, reduce fuel gas usage, and lower carbon emissions.
The project’s initial phase focuses on a Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study to fine-tune the technical solution and develop a Class 2 cost estimate. This study, expected to conclude in the first half of FY27, will determine the final configuration of an integrated system combining approximately 2MW of solar generation, 5MWh of battery storage, and advanced predictive controls. The Powerhouse platform will supplement existing gas generators with fast-response power support and reserve capacity.
Flexible Commercial Models Under Review
Synertec’s FEED proposal includes evaluating both a traditional capital sale and a Build, Own, Operate and Maintain (BOOM) model, reflecting growing industry interest in operationally integrated energy solutions. Regardless of the delivery model chosen, Synertec will provide ongoing operational support, including monitoring, optimisation, and maintenance services.
Based on preliminary designs, the project’s value is estimated between $4.5 million and $5.5 million, contingent on Amplitude Energy’s Final Investment Decision. This contract win underscores Powerhouse’s scalability and suitability for complex industrial applications beyond remote microgrids, extending into sectors like mining, data centres, and critical infrastructure.
Strategic Validation Through Hitachi Energy Partnership
Synertec’s collaboration with Hitachi Energy adds a layer of power conversion and grid integration expertise, enhancing the industrial energy solution’s differentiation. This partnership is a key pillar in Synertec’s strategy to expand Powerhouse’s footprint across multiple market segments, including energy, mining, and urban resilience.
Managing Director Michael Carroll highlighted the project’s significance, stating it reflects Powerhouse’s ability to optimise thermal generation assets with renewable and storage technologies. He noted the growing demand for reliable, cost-effective, and lower-emission power solutions positions Synertec well to capture emerging industrial energy opportunities.
Bottom Line?
The Orbost project could become a blueprint for scaling Synertec’s Powerhouse platform across Australia’s industrial energy landscape, with FEED outcomes and Amplitude Energy’s investment decision shaping its immediate trajectory.
Questions in the middle?
- Will Amplitude Energy proceed with the full project after FEED completion?
- How will Synertec’s BOOM model fare against traditional capital sales in industrial energy contracts?
- Can the Powerhouse platform replicate this success across other large-scale industrial clients?
