Arika Resources Kicks Off Major Drilling at Kookynie After High-Grade Gold Hits

Mining By Maxwell Dee 4 min read

Arika Resources has launched a significant +20,000m drilling campaign at its Kookynie Gold Project, following surface rock chip assays hitting up to 109g/t gold and confirming new high-grade targets.

  • Commencement of +20,000m RC drilling at Kookynie and Yundamindra
  • High-grade surface samples up to 109g/t Au bolster target pipeline
  • Focus on Cosmopolitan, Altona, and Ithaca prospects with new discoveries
  • Recent sampling shows nearly 50% of assays above 1 g/t Au
  • Drilling to test extensions of known mineralisation and untested structures

Drilling Resumes at Kookynie Amid High-Grade Surface Gold

Arika Resources (ASX:ARI) has initiated a major Reverse Circulation (RC) drilling program at its 100%-owned Kookynie Gold Project in Western Australia, marking the first drilling at the site in five years. This campaign is part of a broader +20,000-metre exploration push across Kookynie and the nearby Yundamindra project, aiming to unlock new high-grade gold zones and extensions of historically rich lodes.

The drilling kicked off at the Cosmopolitan prospect over the weekend, targeting not only known mineralisation but also a suite of newly identified structures revealed through detailed aeromagnetic analysis and surface sampling. The program's early momentum is underpinned by exceptional rock chip assay results, with gold grades soaring as high as 109 grams per tonne (g/t) from recent geochemical sampling.

Surface Sampling Uncovers Multiple High-Grade Targets

Arika's recent surface rock chip program has significantly expanded the project's target pipeline. Out of 166 assays received so far, 82 samples; nearly half; returned gold grades exceeding 1 g/t, and 43 samples surpassed 5 g/t. These results include previously unrecognised second-order linking structures between the Cosmopolitan and Altona lodes, as well as promising trends in the Ithaca prospect area that may mirror the prolific Ulysses-Orient Well corridor operated by Genesis Minerals nearby.

Managing Director Justin Barton emphasised the fresh approach Arika is taking: "We’re systematically evaluating Kookynie at a project scale, leveraging comprehensive datasets and structural targeting techniques. The spectacular initial results from detailed mapping and sampling validate our strategy and reveal numerous new opportunities that have never been drill tested." He highlighted the historical richness of the area, noting that the Cosmopolitan and Altona mines produced hundreds of thousands of ounces of gold at exceptional grades during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Strategic Expansion and Exploration Methodology

Arika's acquisition of the Iris tenement package last year effectively doubled its ground holding at Kookynie, enabling a more coherent exploration strategy across approximately 150 square kilometres. The company is applying a methodology akin to that which Genesis Minerals used to develop its 2 million-ounce Ulysses resource just along strike to the north.

Drilling will initially focus on testing strike and depth extensions to the Cosmopolitan and Altona main structures and the northeast-trending linking structures between them. This is complemented by ongoing soil geochemical surveys and detailed mapping to refine targets ahead of drill testing.

Broader Exploration Campaign and Historical Context

The Kookynie campaign runs alongside exploration at Yundamindra, another Arika asset with a history of high-grade production and significant exploration upside. Yundamindra lies within trucking distance of established processing facilities and has delivered encouraging shallow intercepts in recent drilling.

While historical production figures for Kookynie and Yundamindra are impressive, Arika cautions that these are not reported under current JORC standards and require further validation. Nonetheless, the combination of historical data, new high-grade surface results, and systematic modern exploration positions Arika to potentially delineate significant gold resources in these under-explored districts.

The company expects ongoing news flow from both projects as drilling progresses and assay results come in, with particular anticipation around the testing of previously untested structures and deep extensions at Cosmopolitan and Diamantina.

Bottom Line?

Arika’s recommencement of drilling backed by outstanding surface assays sets the stage for potential resource growth at Kookynie, but investors should watch for assay confirmations and JORC-compliant resource updates.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will drilling confirm extensions of high-grade mineralisation at the Cosmopolitan and Altona prospects?
  • How might the newly identified linking structures between key lodes alter the project’s resource potential?
  • What impact will the ongoing validation of historical production data under JORC standards have on project valuation?
