Laboratory testwork conducted by the US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has successfully recovered rare earth elements (REE), including the highly sought-after heavy rare earth elements (HREE), into solution from garnet concentrate.

This composite was processed at Nagrom Laboratories to produce andradite-rich garnet concentrates, which were then supplied to ORNL for rare earth extraction testing.
The testwork confirms rare earth elements spanning both light and heavy groups were taken into solution, validating the technical premise that these critical minerals are hosted within the garnet lattice. However, the company cautions that these are early-stage laboratory results, with no assurance yet on economic viability or scalability.
