D3 Energy (ASX:D3E) has kicked off drilling at the Nooitgedacht area within its 100%-owned ER315 permit in South Africa’s Free State Province, marking a significant step in its helium exploration campaign. The first of two planned wells, NGT245 E, is designed to assess the reservoir’s deliverability and collect updated helium and methane concentration data. This move aims to underpin the company’s efforts to increase reserves and convert exploration rights into production rights.
Strategic Location and Technical Focus
Situated about 43 km north of the Bloemskraal area where D3 Energy has already booked reserves, Nooitgedacht lies along the Homestead Fault; an important structural feature in the northern part of ER315. The two wells, NGT245 E and NGT245 D, are positioned near the historic Nooitgedacht Major borehole, which in January 2025 flowed at an average rate of 95 Mscfd with helium concentrations of 5.6% and methane at 83.2%. Targeting faulting and fractures in the Witwatersrand formation, the drilling aims to refine reservoir understanding and support ongoing development.
Budget and Testing Plans Signal Focused Progress
The NGT245 E well carries an estimated drilling and completion cost of around A$200,000. Upon successfully intersecting gas, D3 Energy plans to conduct production testing to gain critical insights into well interference, spacing, and reservoir performance. These results will be pivotal in guiding subsequent applications for production rights and future development decisions within the ER315 permit.
Broader Asset Base and Regulatory Progress
D3 Energy’s footprint in South Africa spans nearly 480,000 acres across multiple permits including ER315, PR016, and ER386. The flagship ER315 permit has independently verified helium concentrations of up to 8% and is subject to a Production Right Application currently under assessment by Petroleum Agency SA. The company’s broader pipeline includes contiguous permits like ER386, situated within the same Virginia Fault corridor that hosts certified reserves and contingent resources, providing a platform for further appraisal and development.
