Diamond Drilling Commences at High-Priority Mt Dillon Target
Great Southern Mining (ASX:GSN) has launched a diamond drilling program of up to 1,300 metres at its Mt Dillon target, situated within the expansive Edinburgh Park Project in northern Queensland. This marks a significant step in exploring what is considered the project's most compelling prospect to date. The drilling aims to test a large-scale induced polarisation (IP) chargeability anomaly identified in 2025, which lies beneath a prominent topographic feature interpreted as a lithocap; a surface expression often associated with underlying intrusive-related gold systems (IRGS).
Geophysical Surveys Reveal Promising Subsurface Anomalies
Earlier gradient array IP surveys delineated a chargeable anomaly approximately 200 to 300 metres below surface at Mt Dillon, potentially indicating the presence of sulphide minerals commonly linked to intrusive systems. Complementary resistivity anomalies suggest zones of pervasive hydrothermal alteration consistent with porphyry-style mineralisation. These geophysical signatures, combined with multi-element geochemical anomalism; including bismuth, indium, molybdenum, lead, selenium, antimony, tungsten, and tellurium; point to a high-temperature, low-pH hydrothermal system typical of high sulphidation epithermal environments.
Gold Fields Subsidiary Funds and Manages Exploration
The drilling program is managed and funded by G-Ex Resources Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Gold Fields Ltd, under an earn-in joint venture agreement. Gold Fields can spend up to A$15 million to earn a 75% interest in the Edinburgh Park Project. The partnership brings the backing of a major mining company to the exploration, potentially accelerating the path to resource definition. Drilling is expected to take four to six weeks, with two holes planned to intercept the chargeability and resistivity anomalies at varying depths and azimuths.
Edinburgh Park: A Region Rich in Intrusive-Related Gold Systems
The Edinburgh Park Project covers 1,447 square kilometres in a region renowned for large-scale epithermal and intrusive-related gold deposits, including Ravenswood (~10 million ounces), Mt Leyshon (+3 million ounces), and Mt Carlton (~2 million ounces). The project targets multiple mineralisation styles, from epithermal gold-silver systems within Permian volcanic sequences to porphyry gold-copper-molybdenum and intrusive-related gold mineralisation within older Carboniferous basement rocks. Mt Dillon’s preserved lithocap and alteration footprint make it a standout target in this prolific geological setting.

Great Southern Mining’s Managing Director, Matthew Keane, highlighted that Mt Dillon is just the beginning. “The scale and prospectivity of the Edinburgh Park Project are expected to generate numerous targets beyond Mt Dillon,” he said. The company plans to continue geochemical and geophysical surveys through 2026 and 2027 to identify additional drill targets, aiming to build on the momentum of this initial diamond drilling phase.
