Vault Minerals Secures Approvals for Southern Tailings Facility Construction

Mining By Maxwell Dee 2 min read

Vault Minerals has cleared major regulatory hurdles to construct the Southern Tailings Management Facility at its Sugar Zone mine, paving the way for more cost-efficient operations.

  • Received Closure Plan Amendment and Environmental Compliance Approval
  • Southern Tailings Management Facility to replace previous tailings storage methods
  • Site preparation underway with major construction planned through 2027
  • Underground development started July 1, supplying waste rock for dam construction

Regulatory Green Light for Southern Tailings Facility

Vault Minerals (ASX:VAU) has secured crucial regulatory approvals from Ontario authorities to construct the Southern Tailings Management Facility (STMF) at its Sugar Zone gold mine. The Ontario Ministry of Energy and Mines formally filed the Closure Plan Amendment on 16 July 2026, while the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks granted the final Amended Sewage Environmental Compliance Approval on 22 July. This latter approval specifically authorises tailings discharge into the STMF, marking a significant step forward for the project.

Capital Efficiency and Operational Improvements

The STMF is set to become the sole tailings storage facility for the life of the current Ore Reserve, replacing the previously used combination of dry-stack tailings and slurry deposition at the Northern Tailings Management Facility. This consolidation is expected to deliver a more capital-efficient and lower-cost operating solution, which could materially influence project economics and operational flexibility.

Construction Progress and Timeline

Site preparation is already well advanced, with vegetation clearing and logging completed at the STMF location. Construction activities during the 2026 Canadian summer will focus on grubbing, foundation earthworks for dam construction, drainage installation, access road development, laydown areas, and non-contact water diversion channels. Primary dam construction and pipeline installation are planned for completion during the 2027 summer construction season.

Underground Development Supporting Construction

Underground development at Sugar Zone recommenced on 1 July 2026, generating waste rock that will supplement existing stockpiles to provide construction material for the dam. This aligns with Vault’s broader strategy to optimise resources and maintain momentum on site ahead of a planned plant restart in early FY28.

Bottom Line?

Vault’s regulatory wins and construction momentum at Sugar Zone signal a tangible step toward operational efficiency gains and cost savings, though investors should watch for construction milestones and further project updates.

Questions in the middle?

  • How will the STMF impact overall project capital expenditure and operating costs?
  • What are the environmental risks associated with tailings discharge into the STMF?
  • When might Vault provide updated timelines or financial guidance tied to this infrastructure development?
