Financial Services By Claire Turing 4 min read

Wilson Asset Management's active portfolio surged 75.5% in FY2026, vastly outperforming benchmarks and underpinning a generous fully franked dividend. The fund's pivot to AI, critical minerals, and small resources sectors underpins a cautiously optimistic outlook amid market volatility.

  • Investment portfolio soared 75.5% in FY2026
  • Fully franked dividends increased to 6.4 cents per share
  • Portfolio shifted towards AI, materials, and tech sectors
  • Small resources outperformed while small industrials lagged
  • AI capital expenditure boom shapes market leadership

Record Portfolio Gains Defy Market Expectations

Wilson Asset Management (ASX:WAA) delivered a staggering 75.5% return on its active investment portfolio for the financial year ending 30 June 2026, obliterating the S&P/ASX All Ordinaries Accumulation Index’s 5.7% gain and the Bloomberg AusBond Bank Bill Index’s 3.9% return. This performance marks a new high-water mark for the fund since its inception in January 2008, with a compound annual return of 14.4% per annum.

The fund’s outperformance of 69.8% over the ASX All Ords and 71.6% over cash benchmarks underscores a highly successful year for active stock selection and sector rotation, despite a challenging macroeconomic backdrop.

Dividend Boost Reflects Strong Earnings and Confidence

Reflecting its robust earnings, Wilson Asset Management announced a fully franked full-year dividend of 6.4 cents per share, including special dividends totaling 3.0 cents per share. This translates to an 8.2% fully franked dividend yield and an 11.7% grossed-up yield based on the 21 July 2026 share price of $1.15. The company’s dividend reinvestment plan continues without discount, offering shareholders flexible options to compound their investment.

Interest Rate Shifts and Sector Rotation Drive Returns

The fund’s outperformance was underpinned by timely portfolio adjustments in response to rapidly evolving Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) interest rate expectations. Early in FY2026, markets anticipated multiple rate cuts; however, inflation surprises and RBA hikes reversed this outlook, prompting Wilson Asset Management to aggressively rotate its portfolio towards small resources in October 2025.

Small resources soared 29.2% for the year, dwarfing the 5.5% gain in Small Ordinaries and contrasting sharply with the -3.9% decline in Small Industrials. The onset of geopolitical tensions, notably the Iran conflict in March, triggered a sell-off in small resources, particularly gold, impacted by inflation and US dollar strength. Yet, these sector moves created fertile ground for active managers to exploit mispricings.

AI and Technology Lead Market Leadership

Wilson Asset Management significantly increased its exposure to information technology, lifting weighting from 5.8% to 20.5% in six months, alongside a materials sector increase to 40.5%. The fund identified artificial intelligence (AI) as a key driver of market leadership, with AI-related capital expenditure forecast by Citi to exceed USD 1 trillion in 2027, growing 33% year-on-year.

This AI boom spans semiconductors, data centres, power delivery, and critical minerals, with major spenders including Amazon, Meta, Google, and Microsoft accounting for roughly 90% of total expenditure. The fund’s portfolio reflects these themes with investments in AI infrastructure (Firmus Technologies), electrification (Maas Group Holdings), and AI medtech platforms (Echo IQ).

Active Management Navigates Market Volatility and Opportunities

Despite a sharp 32% drawdown in the Goldman Sachs Momentum Basket in July 2026; the fastest in over 30 years; Wilson Asset Management views recent market weakness as driven by positioning rather than fundamentals. This capitulation, coupled with hedge fund deleveraging, is seen as creating opportunities in catalyst-rich stocks.

The fund’s portfolio turnover increased to 10.0 times in FY2026, up 13.6% from the prior year, reflecting active repositioning. Capital raising activity also surged, with 87 raises completed, more than doubling the prior year’s 41.

Key Stock Picks Reflect Thematic Focus

Wilson Asset Management’s stock selections emphasize critical minerals, infrastructure electrification, AI, and US consumer sectors. Notable holdings include Lindian Resources (ASX:LIN), entering rare earths production in Malawi; Maas Group Holdings (ASX:MGH), a diversified industrial player; and Zip Co (ASX:ZIP), a payments company benefiting from US consumer trends.

This thematic approach aligns with the fund’s view that a peak and potential decline in interest rates could trigger a re-rating of small cap industrials, currently trading at multi-year discounts due to passive investing trends and superannuation asset concentration.

Bottom Line?

Wilson Asset Management’s record FY2026 gains and dividend lift signal strong active management execution, but the sustainability of AI-driven market leadership and interest rate shifts warrant close monitoring.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will AI capital expenditure continue to sustain equity market leadership beyond 2027?
  • How might further RBA rate moves influence small cap industrials’ valuation recovery?
  • Can Wilson Asset Management maintain its high portfolio turnover without diluting returns?
