Bayan Mining Kicks Off Maiden Drilling at Desert Star and Advances Rare Earth Processing Deal

Mining By Maxwell Dee 3 min read

Bayan Mining has launched its first-ever drilling program at the Desert Star Rare Earth Project, confirming key mineralisation and signing a strategic MoU with US Critical Materials to develop processing technologies.

  • Maiden reverse circulation drilling commenced at Desert Star
  • Monazite-hosted rare earth mineralisation confirmed by mineralogy
  • Non-binding MoU signed with US Critical Materials for beneficiation tech
  • Priority exploration targets identified at Bayan Springs North
  • Strong cash position of A$1.44 million supports ongoing activities

Desert Star Drilling Marks Major Milestone

Bayan Mining and Minerals Ltd (ASX:BMM) has initiated its maiden reverse circulation (RC) drilling program at the 100%-owned Desert Star Rare Earth Project in California, marking the first subsurface test of its high-grade rare earth element (REE) targets. The program, designed to probe the scale and continuity of mineralisation down-dip, follows extensive surface sampling that revealed up to 9.11% total rare earth oxides (TREO) in heavy mineral concentrates.

Drilling is targeting extensions of geophysical anomalies identified from integrated geological mapping and radiometric surveys, with a particular focus on a low-susceptibility, high-density body commencing approximately 100 meters below surface. Samples are being rigorously collected and analysed under stringent QA/QC protocols, with results pending.

Mineralogy Confirms Monazite-Dominant REE System

Strategic Partnership with US Critical Materials Corp

Bayan has entered a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding with US Critical Materials Corp (USCM) to collaboratively evaluate beneficiation technologies on bastnaesite- and ancylite-hosted REE mineralisation from USCM's Sheep Creek Project in Montana. This alliance leverages Bayan's exclusive licensed processing technologies developed by the Colorado School of Mines and aims to advance pilot-scale metallurgical test work and flowsheet optimisation.

The MoU outlines a joint technical committee to oversee the program, with USCM maintaining regulatory oversight aligned with US national security priorities. While the agreement is non-binding and no investment terms are finalised, USCM has expressed interest in a potential strategic investment pending satisfactory technical outcomes.

Exploration Focus Shifts with Bayan Springs North Divestment

In Nevada, Bayan defined two priority exploration targets at the Bayan Springs North Project using new USGS Earth MRI airborne magnetic and radiometric data. These targets, associated with intrusive centers and potassic alteration, align with models from the nearby Maverick Springs mineralised system and are supported by anomalous geochemical signatures.

Subsequent to the quarter, Bayan entered a binding agreement to divest Bayan Springs North to Sun Silver Ltd (ASX:SS1) for up to A$800,000 plus a retained 1% Net Smelter Return royalty, with Sun Silver holding a repurchase option on half the royalty. This move allows Bayan to concentrate resources on its rare earth projects.

Financial Position and Ongoing Development

Bayan closed the quarter with a cash balance of A$1.44 million, following exploration expenditure of $235,000. The company appointed key contractors WaterPros and MP Environmental to complete drill pad construction, access roads, and water infrastructure at Desert Star, ensuring compliance with Bureau of Land Management standards and smooth commencement of drilling.

Alongside advancing its core projects, Bayan has established a Suriname-domiciled subsidiary to pursue exploration and partnership opportunities, reflecting a broader strategic approach to value accretive projects across multiple commodities.

Bottom Line?

Bayan’s maiden drilling and strategic US partnership set the stage for critical assay results and potential processing breakthroughs, but investors should watch for metallurgical outcomes and the financial impact of recent project divestments.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will assay results from Desert Star drilling confirm the continuity of high-grade REE mineralisation at depth?
  • How will the collaboration with US Critical Materials influence Bayan’s processing technology commercialisation and potential US investment?
  • What are the expected financial and operational impacts of divesting Bayan Springs North on Bayan’s exploration focus and cash flow?
