Alkane Resources Boosts Storheden Gold Resource by 26 Percent

Alkane Resources has expanded its Storheden gold resource near the Björkdal mine in Sweden, adding Indicated Resources and increasing contained gold by 26%. Recent drilling revealed high-grade veins along a 2.7 km strike, with mineralisation still open in multiple directions.

Storheden Resource Expansion Signals Growth Potential

Alkane Resources (ASX:ALK) has significantly increased the gold resource at its Storheden Deposit, part of the Björkdal Operation in northern Sweden. The updated Mineral Resource estimate now includes 1.07 million tonnes of Indicated Resources grading 2.51 grams per tonne gold, containing 87,000 ounces, alongside 1.85 million tonnes of Inferred Resources at 2.11 g/t for 125,000 ounces. This marks a 26% rise in contained gold within the Inferred category compared to last year’s estimate, while also introducing a meaningful Indicated classification for the first time.

The Storheden Deposit lies just 700 metres north of the existing Björkdal mine infrastructure, with recent drilling campaigns extending the known strike length of gold-bearing quartz veins to 2.7 kilometres and confirming continuity to a depth of 464 metres. Importantly, mineralisation remains open in all directions, underscoring the potential for further resource growth.

High-Grade Intercepts Reinforce Geological Model

The mineralised quartz veins strike northeast-southwest and are hosted within volcanics and intrusives of the Skellefte Group. Structural complexities and rheological contrasts between rock units appear to localise gold deposition, with the deposit’s style analogous to the nearby Björkdal mine. Visible gold is often associated with bismuth-tellurides and scheelite, alongside common sulphides such as pyrite and pyrrhotite.

Advancing Towards Underground Development

Alkane plans to commence underground development at Storheden in September 2026, starting with an exploration drive designed to provide access for depth testing and infill drilling. An initial 10,000 metres of surface drilling is scheduled for fiscal 2027 to further delineate the resource and explore extensions. This infrastructure will also support potential future production, marking a step towards integrating Storheden into Björkdal’s mining operations.

Managing Director Nic Earner emphasised the deposit’s promise, stating that the recent drilling campaign highlights the scale and continuity of mineralisation, which remains open and largely untested at depth. The addition of Indicated Resources reflects increased drill density and confidence, laying the groundwork for mine development and permitting processes.

Strategic Importance Within Alkane’s Portfolio

The Björkdal mine has a long production history dating back to 1988 and has yielded approximately 1.69 million ounces of gold to date. Storheden’s proximity and geological similarity offer potential to extend mine life and enhance production profiles. Alkane’s broader portfolio includes Australian assets like the Tomingley and Costerfield mines, as well as the large Boda-Kaiser gold-copper project, positioning the company for diversified growth.

While the updated Mineral Resource is encouraging, it remains a resource estimate rather than a reserve, meaning economic extraction has yet to be demonstrated. Further drilling, metallurgical testing, and permitting will be critical to confirming the deposit’s viability. Alkane’s forthcoming NI 43-101 technical report, due in September 2026, is expected to provide more detailed insights.
