Austral Resources has invested in a new agglomeration drum at its Mt Kelly facility, underpinning its long-term copper production strategy and reinforcing its position in North West Queensland's copper sector.

  • New agglomeration drum delivered to Mt Kelly
  • Supports decades of copper oxide production
  • Maintains region's only SX-EW copper cathode facility
  • Part of disciplined long-life infrastructure strategy
  • Complements Rocklands sulphide processing capability

Critical Infrastructure Upgrade at Mt Kelly

Austral Resources Australia Ltd (ASX:AR1) has taken a decisive step to secure its Western Operations' future by installing a new agglomeration drum at the Mt Kelly Copper Processing Facility. This replacement, approved by the renewed Board in late 2025, marks a key investment in long-life processing infrastructure designed to sustain copper production for decades.

The outgoing drum has been a workhorse, processing over 22 million tonnes of ore and contributing to the production of more than 155,000 tonnes of LME Grade A copper cathode. Its timely replacement ensures Mt Kelly remains the region's only solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) copper cathode facility, a critical asset that complements Austral's sulphide processing operations at Rocklands.

Strategic Commitment to Sustainable Growth

Chief Operating Officer Shane O'Connell emphasised that the company's strategy goes beyond short-term production targets. "Our operational reset has never been about achieving short-term production milestones. It has been about rebuilding Austral with the infrastructure required to support decades of reliable copper production," he said. The Board’s proactive approval of the drum replacement signals confidence in Mt Kelly’s long-term viability and Austral’s broader Western Operations.

This investment aligns with Austral’s disciplined approach since its recapitalisation and Board renewal, focusing on pre-emptive upgrades rather than reactive fixes. By replacing critical equipment ahead of its end-of-life, Austral is positioning Mt Kelly to reliably support its copper oxide production strategy and underpin future growth.

Building a Regional Copper Champion

Austral’s dual hubs at Mt Kelly and Rocklands offer a unique infrastructure platform in North West Queensland. Mt Kelly’s SX-EW facility produces high-purity copper cathode, while Rocklands provides conventional sulphide processing. This complementary setup supports multiple operating mines and development opportunities, reinforcing Austral’s ambition to consolidate copper assets and create sustainable shareholder value in the region.

Every capital decision is weighed against the goal of building a sustainable copper business capable of weathering commodity cycles. The new agglomeration drum is a critical component of the heap leach process, enhancing copper recovery and operational efficiency for years to come.

Infrastructure as a Foundation for Long-Term Production

Mt Kelly remains the cornerstone of Austral’s Western Operations, and the new drum ensures this facility can continue producing LME Grade A copper cathode reliably. It also complements the growing sulphide processing capabilities at Rocklands, together creating an unmatched processing infrastructure in the North West Queensland copper province.

Austral’s investment in the agglomeration drum underscores a broader commitment to regional growth and operational resilience. This move follows recent strategic initiatives, including securing full control over Mt Kelly’s copper output after settling the Anthill Project Agreement, which positions the company well for future expansion.

Bottom Line?

Austral’s proactive infrastructure upgrade at Mt Kelly signals confidence in long-term copper production, setting a solid foundation amid evolving regional opportunities.

Questions in the middle?

  • How will the new agglomeration drum impact Mt Kelly’s production efficiency and costs?
  • What are the next major capital investments planned to support Austral’s growth ambitions?
  • How might Austral’s infrastructure platform influence consolidation dynamics in North West Queensland’s copper sector?
