Centaurus Attracts US$320 Million Financing Interest for Jaguar Nickel Project

Mining By Maxwell Dee 4 min read

Centaurus Metals has made significant strides towards a Final Investment Decision for its Jaguar Nickel Sulphide Project, securing strong debt financing interest, critical infrastructure approvals, and advancing engineering and pre-development works in Brazil.

  • US$320 million in non-binding debt offers received
  • 230kV national power grid connection approved
  • Pará State grants substantial tax incentives
  • Basic engineering completed, project team expanded
  • New copper anomalies and metallurgical success at Boi Novo

Robust Financing Interest Positions Jaguar for Investment Decision

Centaurus Metals Limited (ASX:CTM) has attracted non-binding debt financing offers totaling up to US$320 million for its Jaguar Nickel Sulphide Project in Brazil, including multiple proposals exceeding US$250 million. Among the interested parties is the Brazilian National Development Bank (BNDES), which submitted a Letter of Intent for long-term funding, underscoring strong institutional support for critical mineral projects in the country. The company aims to secure credit-approved terms and appoint a preferred financier group by the end of September 2026, a pivotal step towards a Final Investment Decision (FID) targeted for late Q3 2026.

Engineering Milestones and Team Expansion Drive Project Forward

Basic engineering for Jaguar has been completed in Australia, with design responsibilities now transitioned to the Brazil-based project team. This handover marks a crucial milestone, enabling detailed engineering and procurement activities to progress locally. Material Take Off work for major construction packages has commenced, feeding into the final capital expenditure estimate. The project team has bolstered its ranks with the appointment of experienced engineer Thiago Costa as Project Director, alongside senior additions in engineering, procurement, and project controls, preparing for the ramp-up of construction activities post-FID.

Critical Infrastructure and Environmental Approvals Secured

The Operador Nacional do Sistema Elétrico (ONS) has approved Jaguar’s connection to Brazil’s national 230kV power grid, allocating an initial 20MW of power. This connection promises more reliable and lower-cost electricity compared to regional networks, with transmission charges less than half those of lower-voltage alternatives. The 36km transmission line extension to the project’s main substation is fully permitted, including environmental and mining easements, mitigating operational risks. Concurrently, the Pará State Environmental Agency (SEMAS) approved amendments to the project layout under the Installation Licence, incorporating recent design revisions.

Pará State Tax Incentives Enhance Project Economics

Centaurus Níquel Ltda, the company’s Brazilian subsidiary, has been granted extensive tax incentives by the Pará State government. These include full exemptions from the ICMS tax on goods, equipment, raw materials, and reagents purchased or imported, as well as a 50% reduction on fuel and power purchases within the state. The incentives are tied to ESG credentials and investment scale, effectively deferring tax burdens to the export stage where nickel concentrate sales are exempt. This fiscal relief is expected to bolster Jaguar’s position in the bottom quartile of the global nickel cost curve.

Pre-Development Earthworks and Road Upgrades Underway

Site preparations have commenced with earthmoving contractors mobilised to establish foundational infrastructure, including the project site office. Roadworks along the Três Marias access road are improving site accessibility through widening, drainage, and grading upgrades, anticipating increased traffic during construction. Additional improvements on the connecting Laranjeiras Road are planned ahead of FID to ensure smooth logistics.

Boi Novo Copper-Gold Project Expands with New Targets and Metallurgical Success

Exploration at the Boi Novo Project continues to deliver promising results. Initial surface sampling at the Rio Novo tenure has uncovered multiple copper-in-soil anomalies exceeding 2km in length, with over 4,000 soil samples collected and more than half of the area unexplored by modern methods. Fixed Loop EM and drone magnetics surveys are refining drill targets ahead of a planned Q3 2026 drilling campaign. Recent drilling at Boi Novo confirmed broad copper-gold mineralisation and intersected significant itabirite iron mineralisation. Metallurgical testing of the maiden copper-gold composite yielded a high-quality concentrate with over 25% copper content and recoveries up to 95%, indicating potential for processing at nearby Carajás facilities.

Jambreiro Iron Ore Project Advances Offtake and Environmental Licensing

Centaurus’ Jambreiro Project in Minas Gerais remains under active evaluation, with ongoing offtake discussions and environmental re-licensing progressing. Laboratory geotechnical testing supports the co-disposal of tails and waste materials, informing waste dump design. The project holds a substantial Mineral Resource, with interest from potential investors facilitated through a virtual data room.

Strong Cash Position and Operational Safety Maintained

At quarter-end, Centaurus held A$17.5 million in cash reserves. Operationally, the company recorded 48 months without a Lost Time Injury, maintaining zero reportable injury frequency and severity rates over the past 12 months, reflecting robust safety management.

Bottom Line?

The next few months will be critical as Centaurus seeks credit-approved financing terms and finalises its investment decision, with project execution hinging on these outcomes.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will Centaurus secure firm financing commitments to meet its FID timeline?
  • How will the Pará State tax incentives impact Jaguar’s long-term cost competitiveness?
  • Can the Boi Novo drilling and metallurgical results translate into a viable standalone or integrated operation?
