Prospect Resources Expands Mumbezhi Copper-Gold Resource by 20% with Phase 3 Drilling Underway

Mining By Maxwell Dee 4 min read

Prospect Resources has boosted its Mumbezhi Copper Project resource by 20%, notably doubling gold content, while commencing an extensive Phase 3 drilling program aimed at further expansion and upgrading.

  • 20% increase in Mumbezhi Mineral Resource Estimate to 208 Mt
  • Gold resource more than doubles to 262,100 ounces
  • Phase 3 drilling underway with 26,000m planned
  • Kabikupa metallurgical tests yield high-grade copper concentrates
  • Company holds A$36.6 million cash with zero debt

Significant Resource Upgrade at Mumbezhi

Prospect Resources Ltd (ASX:PSC) has delivered a substantial update to its Mumbezhi Copper Project in Zambia, reporting a 20% increase in its Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) to 208.1 million tonnes at 0.42% copper (0.49% copper equivalent). Notably, the gold content within the resource has surged by 106%, now totalling 262,100 ounces, while copper content rose 14% compared to the February 2026 MRE. This expansion reflects the success of recent drilling and a comprehensive gold re-assaying program, which revealed more extensive and consistent gold mineralisation than previously understood.

The updated resource incorporates new shallow copper sulphide mineralisation at West Mwombezhi, a satellite deposit approximately 13km north of the flagship Nyungu Central deposit, which itself saw an increase in confidence with 35% of its MRE now classified as Indicated. The copper grades at Mumbezhi remain competitive with world-class mines in the Zambian Copperbelt, underpinning the project's tier-1 status in the region.

Phase 3 Drilling Targets Growth and Upgrades

Building on this momentum, Prospect has commenced an ambitious Phase 3 drilling campaign comprising approximately 60 diamond drill holes, 30 reverse circulation holes, and 320 scout aircore holes, totalling around 26,000 metres. The program aims to extend and upgrade resources at Nyungu Central and West Mwombezhi, including upgrading Inferred Resources to Indicated status to support an upcoming Scoping Study scheduled for late 2026 or early 2027.

Exploration is also targeting new maiden resources at regional prospects such as Kamafamba, Nyungu South, Sharamba, and Chipimpa. Ground-based induced polarisation geophysical surveys are supporting drilling across multiple prospects. Reflecting the enhanced understanding of gold's role at Mumbezhi, all copper mineralised intersections in Phase 3 drilling will now be routinely assayed for gold, potentially improving the project's economics through by-product credits.

Metallurgical Testwork Confirms Processing Simplicity

Prospect reported encouraging metallurgical results from the Kabikupa deposit, a key component of Mumbezhi. Testing by Core Metallurgy Pty Ltd produced high-grade copper concentrates exceeding 25% copper with recoveries above 94% from both transition and low-grade fresh mineralisation zones, achieved through a simple flotation flowsheet and a coarse grind size (P80 of 250 microns). These findings suggest potential for lower capital and operating costs for future processing facilities.

Multi-element analysis confirmed concentrate quality consistent with smelter requirements in Zambia, supporting the viability of a centralised processing plant for Mumbezhi. Prospect is advancing further metallurgical testwork on gold and cobalt recoveries and geometallurgical modelling to refine the project's development pathway.

Robust Financial Position Supports Development

Financially, Prospect remains well-funded with approximately A$36.6 million in cash and no debt as of 30 June 2026. This strong cash position underpins ongoing exploration, evaluation, and technical studies at Mumbezhi. The company reported operating cash outflows of A$1.5 million and capitalised exploration expenditure of A$2.3 million for the quarter, reflecting active investment in advancing the project.

Meanwhile, exploration at the Omaruru Lithium Project in Namibia has been scaled back to minimal holding levels as Prospect pursues commercialisation options for that asset.

What Lies Ahead for Mumbezhi

With Phase 3 drilling well underway and results expected progressively through the second half of 2026, the market will be watching closely for further resource expansions and upgrades. The enhanced gold by-product potential, combined with robust metallurgical recoveries, could materially improve the project's economic profile ahead of the targeted Scoping Study in Q4 2026 or Q1 2027.

However, the scale and complexity of the Mumbezhi Project mean that ongoing technical studies and drilling results will be critical to validating these early positive signals. How the company balances exploration success with development costs and market conditions will shape Mumbezhi's path to production.

Bottom Line?

Prospect’s resource growth and metallurgical progress at Mumbezhi set the stage for a pivotal scoping study, but the market will await Phase 3 drilling results to gauge the project’s full potential.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will ongoing Phase 3 drilling confirm further resource expansions at Nyungu Central and regional prospects?
  • How materially will the enhanced gold by-product credits improve Mumbezhi’s project economics?
  • Can metallurgical testwork sustain high recoveries across variable ore zones to support a simple processing plant?
