  • Partnerships with Vitalant and Hoxworth blood centers
  • 68% year-on-year growth in aquaculture cryopreservation throughput
  • $32 million capital raise supports US commercial build-out
  • Medical device registration and US manufacturing on track for 1H FY2027

US Military Phase II Testing Surpasses Regulatory Benchmarks

Vitrafy Life Sciences (ASX:VFY) has delivered a significant leap in cryopreservation technology with its US Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) Phase II in-vitro platelet testing, achieving an impressive 94.4% post-thaw platelet recovery. This result not only outperforms the current US fresh platelet guideline of 75% but also exceeds European standards, positioning Vitrafy well ahead of existing benchmarks for platelet preservation. The testing also confirmed superior platelet functionality post-thaw, with Vitrafy's no-wash protocol retaining nearly double the key platelet receptors compared to traditional wash methods.

This milestone is particularly notable given the absence of any FDA-approved cryopreserved platelet products, underscoring Vitrafy's potential to address a critical unmet need in transfusion medicine. The company has leveraged these results to deepen engagement with the US military and FDA officials, including participation at the THOR Network Annual Conference in Ireland, which unites global experts in trauma and transfusion medicine.

New Partnerships Target US Civilian Blood Market

Building on its military validation, Vitrafy has secured formal partnerships with two leading US blood collection networks: Vitalant Innovation Center and Hoxworth Blood Center. These collaborations aim to deploy Vitrafy's next-generation cryopreservation ecosystem, initially focusing on platelets and red blood cells. By targeting blood collection points, the origin of most blood products, Vitrafy seeks to accelerate market adoption and directly tackle supply chain challenges, particularly the looming discontinuation of legacy red blood cell cryopreservation technologies in 2027.

These partnerships reflect Vitrafy's strategic focus on the US civilian market, where structural limitations in blood product preservation are driving demand for innovative solutions. The company is actively expanding its commercial footprint in the US, recruiting senior scientific and sales personnel with expertise in regulated blood products.

Aquaculture Segment Shows Strong Growth

Vitrafy’s animal health division also posted solid progress, completing its annual cryopreservation season for domestic salmon aquaculture clients Huon Aquaculture and Tassal Group. The company processed 1,250 packs of salmon milt during the quarter, marking a 68% increase year-on-year. This growth was facilitated by the enhanced capacity of Vitrafy’s Guardion cryopreservation device, which allows more samples per cycle and improves processing efficiency.

Additionally, Vitrafy commenced bovine testing under its agreement with IMV Technologies Group in France, with completion expected during the first half of FY2027.

Capital Raise Fuels US Expansion and Device Manufacturing

Vitrafy successfully raised $32 million through an institutional placement and a share purchase plan to fund the scale-up of Guardion device manufacturing and accelerate its US commercial operations. The company ended the quarter with $41.2 million in cash and term deposits, excluding $2 million from the SPP settled post-quarter.

Manufacturing of Guardion units is progressing, with two units completed in Q4 and ten more expected in Q1 FY2027. Medical device registration remains on track for the first half of FY2027, alongside the establishment of US manufacturing facilities.

Cash burn increased slightly to approximately $1.9 million per month, reflecting investments in regulatory testing, commercial team expansion, and device production. Vitrafy estimates it has around 8.7 quarters of funding available, factoring in term deposits.

Regulatory and Commercial Outlook

With FDA medical device registration targeted for early FY2027, Vitrafy is positioning itself to capitalise on structural gaps in both platelet and red blood cell preservation markets. Engagement with leading US blood networks and military stakeholders suggests a pathway to accelerated adoption, though the timing and scale of commercial impact remain to be seen.

Bottom Line?

Vitrafy’s breakthrough platelet results and deepening US partnerships set the stage for a critical regulatory and commercial push in FY2027.

Questions in the middle?

  • How swiftly will FDA medical device registration be secured given the high platelet recovery results?
  • Can Vitrafy translate military validation into broad civilian market adoption amid legacy technology phase-outs?
  • What revenue impact will Guardion device manufacturing scale-up and US team expansion have in the coming quarters?
