Altamin Completes Key Lazio Studies and Advances Gorno Permitting

Mining By Maxwell Dee 3 min read

Altamin Limited has completed critical technical studies for its Lazio Project, reinforcing its position in premium fertiliser and critical minerals, while progressing permitting and strategic options for its Gorno asset. The company reported a cash balance of A$2.39 million as of June 2026.

  • Lazio Project Scoping Study and technical workstreams finalised
  • Independent studies confirm strong market potential for sulphate of potash
  • Pilot plant design progresses under BRAIN research initiative
  • Gorno Project exploration licence extension underway amid strategic process
  • Group cash position stands at A$2.39 million with focus on non-dilutive funding

Lazio Project Technical Milestones Completed

Altamin Limited (ASX:AZI) has marked significant progress on its Lazio Project, completing all major technical study workstreams required for the Scoping Study. The independent report by Micon International Limited is in its final stages, underpinning a development plan that leverages high-temperature Cesano geothermal brines to produce premium sulphate of potash (SOP) fertiliser products with a markedly lower environmental footprint.

The project’s innovative processing route avoids conventional surface evaporation ponds by employing a mechanical evaporation process powered by geothermal heat. This closed-loop system promises reduced energy costs and aligns with stringent European ESG and regulatory standards, enhancing the potential for securing long-term offtake agreements.

Market and Logistics Studies Highlight Commercial Viability

Independent assessments by FL Global Pte Ltd and RINA SpA have confirmed the Lazio Project’s strong commercial positioning. The SOP Sales and Marketing Study highlighted the project’s competitive edge over traditional Mannheim processing methods by eliminating energy-intensive steps and hazardous chemical use, a key differentiator for European fertiliser buyers increasingly focused on sustainability.

Meanwhile, RINA’s Logistics Study evaluated access to Italian, Mediterranean, and international markets, identifying efficient transport routes via road, rail, and the Civitavecchia Port. These logistics insights support a supply chain model designed to reduce costs and maintain product integrity from plant to market.

Pilot Plant Development Advances under BRAIN Initiative

Altamin’s collaboration with the University of L'Aquila and RINA through the BRAIN research initiative, funded predominantly by Italy’s Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, has reached a key milestone. The first phase of pilot plant design and process development for combined SOP, lithium carbonate, and boron extraction was completed on schedule by 30 June 2026.

This pilot-scale work aims to validate the innovative flowsheet tailored to the unique chemical composition of Cesano geothermal brines, which maximises resource recovery while minimising waste through internal recycling stages.

Gorno Project Maintains Permitting and Strategic Momentum

On the polymetallic front, Altamin continues to manage the Gorno Project’s regulatory status and strategic options. A technical status report supporting the extension and amalgamation of the Cime Exploration Licences has been prepared for submission to Regione Lombardia, with the application due by the end of July.

Simultaneously, Argent Partners remains engaged in advancing a strategic process for Gorno, including due diligence with interested parties. While there is no certainty of a transaction, Altamin retains the option to develop the project independently.

Financial Position and Funding Strategy

At quarter-end, Altamin reported a group cash balance of A$2.39 million, reflecting ongoing exploration expenditure of $1.11 million and director payments totaling $175,000. The company continues to prioritise non-dilutive funding sources, leveraging Italian and EU grant programs aligned with its critical minerals focus.

This funding approach has been validated by prior success through the BRAIN initiative’s Mission Innovation 2.0 grant, positioning Altamin well to support further technical development without immediate equity dilution.

Bottom Line?

Altamin’s completion of key studies and pilot plant milestones for the Lazio Project, alongside steady progress on Gorno’s permitting and strategic options, sets the stage for pivotal developments in the coming quarters.

Questions in the middle?

  • How will the forthcoming Scoping Study report influence Altamin’s project financing and partner engagement?
  • What are the timelines and hurdles anticipated for the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment approvals in Italy?
  • Will the strategic process for the Gorno Project culminate in a transaction or continued in-house development?
