BCAL Diagnostics Boosts Cancer Test Reach and Secures Strategic Funding

Healthcare By Ada Torres 3 min read

BCAL Diagnostics has strengthened its leadership, advanced breast cancer detection tests, and secured key funding and strategic investments to underpin its FY2027 growth plans.

  • New CEO Anne-Louise Arnett appointed with 25+ years experience
  • BREASTEST Monitor shows promising initial clinical sensitivity
  • Validation deal signed with Sonic Healthcare USA for BREASTESTplus V2
  • EarlyDetection.com.au platform expands national referral access
  • Secured $4.9 million funding and acquired 10.2% stake in Genetic Signatures

Leadership and Strategic Investment Strengthen BCAL’s Position

BCAL Diagnostics (ASX:BDX) has fortified its executive team with the appointment of Anne-Louise Arnett as CEO, effective 1 June 2026. Arnett brings over 25 years of medical technology commercialisation and operational leadership, aiming to accelerate BCAL’s commercial execution and international expansion. Complementing this, Michelle Blackwell is set to join as Chief Product Innovation Officer, tasked with driving BCAL’s product pipeline development.

In a move to broaden its molecular diagnostics footprint, BCAL acquired a 10.2% stake in Genetic Signatures Ltd for $1.39 million. Genetic Signatures, focused on infectious disease testing, offers complementary laboratory, manufacturing, and regulatory capabilities that could bolster BCAL’s commercial infrastructure and international reach.

Advances in Breast Cancer Detection and Validation Progress

BCAL continues to expand its breast cancer diagnostics portfolio. The newly developed BREASTEST Monitor, designed to detect local breast cancer recurrence, reported encouraging preliminary results with 91% sensitivity and 95% negative predictive value in women aged 50 and above. While these figures are promising, further clinical validation is required before the test can be commercially launched.

Meanwhile, BCAL signed a significant validation agreement with Sonic Healthcare USA to evaluate BREASTESTplus Version 2 at their CLIA-certified laboratory in Austin, Texas. Sonic Healthcare USA holds an option to negotiate a commercial licence post-validation, marking a crucial step towards US market entry.

Expanding Commercial Access via Digital and Clinical Networks

To facilitate broader adoption of its early cancer detection tests, BCAL launched EarlyDetection.com.au, a digital platform incorporating a Medmate telehealth service. The company also embedded referral forms into major GP and specialist clinical software systems, reaching approximately 97% of Australian general practitioners. Integration with platforms such as Best Practice, Medical Director, and Genie ensures seamless access for healthcare providers nationwide.

The Avantect Pancreatic and Ovarian blood tests recorded 32 tests in the quarter, generating $48,000 in revenue. BCAL submitted a Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) reimbursement application for the Avantect Pancreatic test and is actively engaging with stakeholders to advance this process, underscoring reimbursement as a strategic priority.

Funding Secured to Support FY2027 Growth

BCAL secured $4.9 million in additional funding under its existing $10 million Convertible Note facility, pending shareholder approval for a portion of this amount. The company also received the first tranche of its FY2026 R&D tax offset, approximately $1.4 million, contributing to a cash balance of $1.6 million at quarter-end after the Genetic Signatures investment.

Operating expenses included $1.0 million invested in research and development and $0.9 million in overheads during the quarter. Payments to directors totalled $170,000. BCAL estimates it has approximately 2.6 quarters of funding available, factoring in cash reserves and undrawn financing facilities.

Bottom Line?

BCAL’s strengthened leadership, strategic investment, and funding position set the stage for advancing clinical validation and commercial rollout of its cancer detection tests.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will BREASTEST Monitor’s promising early results translate into successful commercial launch after further validation?
  • How will the Sonic Healthcare USA validation impact BCAL’s ability to enter and compete in the US market?
  • What synergies might emerge from BCAL’s strategic stake in Genetic Signatures to accelerate diagnostics innovation and distribution?
