Azzuro Resources Confirms High-Grade Copper-Gold System at Red Hill Project

Mining By Maxwell Dee 4 min read

Azzuro Resources has locked in a major copper-gold discovery at its newly acquired Red Hill project in Mongolia, confirming a high-grade VMS system over nearly 550 metres of strike with significant expansion potential.

  • Red Hill acquisition completed securing mining licence
  • High-grade copper-gold VMS mineralisation confirmed over 550m strike
  • Separate shallow gold zone extends over 600m corridor
  • Ground gravity and 3D IP surveys refine drill targets
  • Cash position at $2.85 million with $1.1 million spent on acquisition

Strategic Acquisition Unlocks New Copper-Gold Frontier

Azzuro Resources (ASX:AZ9) has transformed its Mongolian portfolio with the acquisition of the Red Hill copper-gold volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) project, securing full ownership of mining licence MV-019681. The deal, completed in April 2026, adds a high-grade asset with a mining licence valid until 2045, covering 79 hectares in the Govi-Altai region.

This acquisition positions Red Hill as a complementary asset to Azzuro’s existing Oval Cu-Ni project nearby, with potential for shared infrastructure and logistics that could extend mine life and improve economics if future studies prove positive.

Phase 1 Drilling Confirms Large, High-Grade VMS System

Highlights include drillhole MU2601 intersecting 13.1 metres at 2.58% copper and 0.96 grams per tonne (g/t) gold, with other intervals showing strong polymetallic grades including silver and zinc. Drillhole MU2605 notably returned a visually estimated 1.6 metres grading 11.94% copper and 1.63 g/t gold, underscoring the system’s high-grade nature.

These results build on earlier due diligence drilling and have been extended with each batch of assays, reinforcing the potential scale and quality of the deposit. Pending assays from recent holes are delayed due to quality control issues but are being reprocessed.

Secondary Shallow Gold Zone Adds Optionality

Alongside the VMS system, Azzuro identified a separate shallow gold mineralisation zone extending over a 600-metre strike corridor north of the main deposit. Assays from several drillholes confirm continuity of this surface-traceable gold zone, which could offer a shorter path to value generation through simpler processing routes such as heap leaching of oxide ores, common in the region.

Geophysical Surveys Sharpen Exploration Targets

To refine drill targeting, the company completed a ground gravity survey over Red Hill, collecting 1,041 stations across nearly 3.8 square kilometres. Terra Resources Pty Ltd is finalising a 3D inversion of this data to integrate with geological models and drilling results.

At the Copper Ridge Cu-Au prospect within the Yambat project, a 3D induced polarisation (IP) survey imaged chargeability anomalies down to 375 metres, tripling previous survey depths. Drilling has commenced with assays pending, potentially adding a second exploration focus within the broader portfolio.

Financial Position and Corporate Developments

Azzuro ended the quarter with $2.85 million in cash after spending $1.12 million on the Red Hill acquisition and $0.56 million on exploration activities, including drilling and geophysical surveys. Administration and corporate costs totalled $0.5 million, including director remuneration.

The company also rebranded from Asian Battery Metals to Azzuro Resources, aligning its identity with a copper and precious metals growth strategy.

Regulatory Environment and Market Backdrop

Mongolia’s government introduced a significant Minerals Law overhaul during the quarter, aiming to update royalty models and provide more exploration flexibility. While Parliament has accepted the draft for consideration, final approval remains pending, injecting some regulatory uncertainty.

Meanwhile, copper prices held near historic highs, peaking at US$14,196 per tonne on the London Metal Exchange in May, supported by structural demand from the global energy transition and constrained supply, creating a favourable market environment for copper explorers like Azzuro.

Bottom Line?

Azzuro’s Red Hill project is shaping up as a significant copper-gold discovery with multiple value levers, but pending assay delays and evolving Mongolian mining regulations warrant close attention.

Questions in the middle?

  • How will pending assay results from recent drillholes affect the size and grade of the Red Hill resource?
  • What impact will Mongolia’s proposed Minerals Law amendments have on project economics and permitting timelines?
  • Can Azzuro successfully integrate Red Hill with its Oval Cu-Ni project to create a longer-life, more economic mining operation?
