Rare Earth Recovery Performance Exceeds Expectations

Iondrive Limited (ASX:ION) has achieved independently validated recovery rates of 93.5% for dysprosium, and 96.5% for both neodymium and praseodymium, from commercial U.S. magnet waste using its proprietary IONSolv™ deep eutectic solvent technology. These results notably surpass the assumptions underpinning the company’s prior techno-economic study, which had estimated dysprosium recovery at just 32.5%. The high-value heavy rare earth dysprosium is particularly critical given its supply constraints and strategic importance in permanent magnet manufacturing.

The validation work was conducted on feedstock supplied by Colt Recycling LLC, confirming the process’s relevance to real-world U.S. waste streams. Additionally, the solvent extraction demonstrated near-complete iron rejection (~99.9%), enhancing the purity of the recovered rare earth oxides. While these outcomes mark a significant technical milestone, Iondrive notes that full-circuit product recovery and commercial product qualification remain outstanding steps.

Oklahoma Support Advances Commercialisation Pathway

In a key commercial development, Iondrive received a Letter of Support from the Oklahoma Department of Commerce outlining potential state and local incentives valued at up to US$5.2 million for the company’s first critical minerals processing module. This support could scale to more than US$15 million for three modules, contingent on eligibility and performance criteria. The Department also offered assistance with site selection, utility coordination, and engagement with local authorities, positioning Oklahoma as a strategic location for Iondrive’s U.S. operations.

This government backing aligns with a broader U.S. policy shift emphasizing domestic rare earth processing, recycling, and magnet supply chain development. The U.S. Department of Energy’s recent US$134 million funding announcement for rare earth recovery projects from unconventional feedstocks, including electronic waste, underscores this momentum. Iondrive’s modular approach, targeting magnet-bearing waste rather than new mining, offers a faster, lower-capital route to supply chain participation.

Leadership and Strategic Focus for U.S. Expansion

To support its U.S. commercial ambitions, Iondrive appointed Kevin Hobbie as Vice President North America, tasked with securing feedstock supply, offtake agreements, and government and strategic partnerships. Hobbie brings experience from leading a commercial-scale battery recycling facility in the U.S., with expertise in process optimisation and navigating funding pathways.

Further strengthening its leadership, Iondrive announced the appointment of Dr Grant Caffery as CEO, effective 1 August 2026. Dr Caffery’s background includes heading innovation at BHP and driving technology commercialisation in the global resources sector. Outgoing CEO Lewis Utting will transition to Chief Strategy & Commercial Officer, focusing on strategic partnerships and funding opportunities.

Financial Position and Cost Management

At quarter-end, Iondrive held $7.0 million in cash, supplemented by expected inflows of $1.4 million from R&D tax incentives and residual government grants over the following two quarters. The company reported net cash outflows of $1.0 million for the quarter, primarily driven by R&D expenditure advancing the IONSolv™ technology and pilot plant construction. A divestment of its South Korean exploration business reduced the annual cost base by approximately $0.6 million, reflecting a strategic focus on core operations.

Commercialisation Next Steps and Funding Strategy

With technical validation in hand, Iondrive’s immediate priorities are securing scalable U.S. feedstock contracts, qualifying recovered rare earth products with downstream customers, and progressing engineering and economic studies for its first Oklahoma module. The company aims to establish a traceable domestic feedstock-to-market loop, reducing reliance on Chinese processing and linking recovered materials to U.S. or allied manufacturers.

Funding for the initial module is being approached as a project-level exercise, prioritising non-dilutive sources such as state and local incentives, federal grants, strategic partnerships, and infrastructure financing. Shareholder equity will be considered only as a last resort to complete the funding package. This staged capital strategy seeks to protect shareholder value while advancing commercial deployment.
