Koppamurra’s PFS Sets Rare Earths Benchmark

Australian Rare Earths Limited (AR3) has unveiled a Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) and maiden Ore Reserve for its Koppamurra Rare Earths Project that place it among Australia’s most advanced ionic clay rare earth developments. The PFS delivers a post-tax NPV8 of A$858 million, an eye-watering IRR of 99%, and a payback period of less than one year on a modest initial capital expenditure of A$178 million.

The project’s economics are underpinned by a low-complexity, capital-light approach featuring shallow open-pit mining and a proven heap leach flowsheet. The Ore Reserve stands at 26 million tonnes grading 920 ppm Total Rare Earth Oxide (TREO), approximately 22% above the global mineral resource average, supporting a 12-year mine life with average annual production of around 1,860 tonnes TREO. This includes critical magnet rare earths such as neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, and terbium, elements increasingly vital to Western supply chains amid China’s tightening export controls.

Pilot Processing Advances at ANSTO’s New Facility

AR3 has become the first industry partner to utilise the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation’s (ANSTO) new critical minerals piloting facility in Sydney. Approximately 30 tonnes of Koppamurra ore have been delivered to the site, with pilot-scale processing scheduled to commence in August 2026. This program aims to produce Mixed Rare Earth Oxide (MREO) samples for customer qualification and to inform the upcoming Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS). The pilot is co-funded by a $5 million Australian Government grant under the International Partnerships in Critical Minerals (IPCM) program.

New Niobium-Rare Earth Carbonatite Discovery at Overland

Exploration at AR3’s Overland Project in South Australia has identified a promising niobium-rare earth carbonatite system, a globally recognised source of both rare earth elements and niobium. A drill hole intersected a 19-metre mineralised interval grading 0.61% TREO, including significant proportions of magnet rare earths and niobium oxides. Petrographic analysis confirmed the presence of pyrochlore, the principal niobium ore mineral. This discovery sits atop a large magnetic anomaly and is set to be followed by expanded geophysical surveys and targeted drilling to delineate the system’s extent.

Financial Position and Corporate Progress

AR3 closed the quarter with a cash balance of A$4.6 million and expects to receive a further A$2.1 million from the IPCM grant in August. The company has secured shareholder approval for prior placements and options, reinforcing its capital structure with 256 million shares and over 46 million options on issue. With the PFS and Ore Reserve in hand, AR3 is advancing its Mining Lease Application targeted for submission in 2026, alongside ongoing offtake discussions and project funding assessments.

While the uranium drilling program at Overland did not yield significant uranium intersections, it provided the serendipitous discovery of the carbonatite system, broadening AR3’s critical minerals portfolio. The company’s strategic positioning, bolstered by government support and a focus on critical magnet and heavy rare earths, aligns well with the growing global imperative for supply chain diversification outside China.
