Brownsville Refinery Study Targets North American Lithium Supply Gap

Lithium Universe Limited (ASX:LU7) has launched a pre-feasibility study (PFS) for its proposed lithium carbonate refinery in Brownsville, Texas, aiming to address the critical shortage of lithium chemical conversion capacity in North America. The refinery is designed to replicate a proven plant in Jiangsu, China, reducing technical and construction risks by leveraging established engineering and operational experience.

The Brownsville project aligns with the massive surge in North American electric vehicle and battery manufacturing investments, which face a bottleneck in domestic lithium chemical production. By sourcing spodumene concentrate primarily from its binding 10-year offtake agreement with Norah Mining in Nigeria, covering about 60% of feedstock needs, the refinery aims to provide a secure, cost-advantaged supply of battery-grade lithium carbonate to the region.

Norah Mining’s spodumene concentrator in Nigeria is progressing well, with construction milestones reached and a 120,000 tonnes per annum capacity expected by late 2026. The offtake agreement includes a 7.5% discount to market pricing, enhancing the refinery’s competitive positioning and enabling potential interim spodumene trading opportunities before refinery commissioning. This flexible merchant refinery model also allows sourcing from multiple producers across North America, Africa, and Brazil, mitigating supply risks.

Lithium Market Recovery Bolsters Project Viability

The lithium market has rebounded strongly from cyclical lows in 2024-25, with battery-grade lithium carbonate prices more than doubling to around US$25,000-27,000 per tonne. Spodumene concentrate prices have similarly surged to approximately US$1,500-1,700 per tonne. These price improvements exceed the conservative long-term assumptions underpinning the Brownsville PFS, making the project’s economics increasingly attractive.

Demand for lithium carbonate is expected to accelerate as lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries gain market share in electric vehicles and energy storage systems, especially in North America where LFP adoption is strong. This contrasts with lithium hydroxide, used in higher-nickel batteries, which is forecast to grow later in the decade. The Brownsville refinery’s focus on lithium carbonate positions it well to capture this structural market shift.

Silver Extraction Recycling Technology Shows Environmental Breakthroughs

In parallel, Lithium Universe completed a life cycle assessment of its Silver Extraction PV Recycling (SEPR) project, which uses proprietary Jet Electrochemical Silver Extraction (JESE) technology to recover silver from end-of-life photovoltaic solar panels. The assessment, conducted by Macquarie University, found the process reduces carbon emissions by 85%, nitric acid consumption by 83%, energy use by 67%, water usage by 77%, and solid waste by 88% compared to conventional nitric acid leaching.

The JESE process achieves rapid silver extraction, 97.1% in four minutes, and produces high-purity silver (99.88%), eliminating the need for downstream refining. This technology not only cuts costs and environmental impact but also supports circular economy principles by preserving photovoltaic substrates for potential reuse.

Exclusive Licence for Gold and Copper Recovery from E-Waste

Lithium Universe has secured exclusive global rights to the University of Edinburgh’s Gold Copper Diamide Extraction (GCDE) technology, a hydrometallurgical process that selectively extracts gold and copper from electronic waste under mild, low-energy conditions. This method avoids conventional high-temperature smelting, using recyclable organic ligands to precipitate gold and copper with exceptional recovery rates, 99.5% for gold and 98.5% for copper, demonstrated in recent testwork.

The GCDE process addresses the fast-growing global e-waste problem, where valuable metals in printed circuit boards represent an “urban ore” resource worth tens of thousands of dollars per tonne. The technology’s modular design and lower capital requirements position Lithium Universe to expand its precious metals recycling footprint alongside its lithium refining ambitions, tapping into the circular economy and sustainability trends.

Board Refresh and Funding Update

The company appointed three new non-executive directors, Gernot Abl as Chairman, Harry Spindler, and Rohan Bone, while four directors stepped down, including former Chairman Iggy Tan and Executive Director Dr Jingyuan Liu, who remain in executive roles. The new board members bring extensive experience in corporate finance, governance, and mining operations, supporting Lithium Universe’s growth trajectory.

Financially, Lithium Universe secured a A$400,000 interest-free loan post-quarter to fund working capital and ongoing PFS activities. The company reported ongoing operating cash outflows and a cash balance of A$57,000 at quarter-end, highlighting the need for further capital raising to advance its projects.
