Historic High-Grade Copper System Revisited
Moonlight Resources (ASX:ML8) has embarked on its inaugural reverse circulation (RC) drilling program at the Peak Downs Copper Prospect, located near Clermont in central Queensland. This marks the first modern, systematic exploration effort at a site historically renowned for exceptionally high-grade copper production in the 19th century.
Between 1862 and 1877, Peak Downs reportedly yielded around 100,000 tonnes of ore averaging approximately 17% copper, an extraordinary grade by any standard. Despite this rich legacy, the prospect has seen minimal recent exploration, leaving its true potential largely untested with contemporary techniques.
Drilling Program Designed to Validate and Expand Historical Data
The initial drilling campaign plans approximately 3,000 metres of RC drilling, focusing on the Central Zone where previous historical drilling indicated relatively continuous copper mineralisation over a 2.5-kilometre strike. Moonlight’s program aims to twin selected historic holes to confirm reported copper grades, test continuity between drill sections, and deepen geological understanding of both shallow oxide and deeper sulphide mineralisation.
Historical drilling from the mid-1990s by Straits Resources returned encouraging intercepts such as 24 metres at 0.97% copper from 8 metres depth, including higher-grade intervals up to 4.48% copper. These results support the interpretation of a stratabound copper system with characteristics akin to Besshi-style mineralisation, hosted within ironstone lodes and chlorite schist horizons.
Strategic Importance Within Moonlight’s Queensland Portfolio
Managing Director Greg Starr emphasised the significance of Peak Downs within Moonlight’s broader exploration strategy. “This initial program is designed to validate select historical data and provide the technical foundation for future work,” he said. “It offers Moonlight the opportunity to determine whether Peak Downs can support a future copper Resource and become an important asset within our Queensland portfolio.”
The drilling is expected to generate new geological and assay data critical for assessing the prospect’s potential to support a maiden Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) compliant with the JORC Code. To date, no such resource has been established, underscoring the prospect’s underexplored status despite its historical credentials.
Next Steps and Broader Exploration Ambitions
Following completion of the RC drilling, Moonlight plans to interpret assay results, refine the geological model, and integrate new data with historical records. Depending on outcomes, further drilling including diamond drilling may be considered to enhance geological, structural, and metallurgical understanding.
Peak Downs sits within the Anakie Inlier, a region with a history of copper and gold mining, and forms part of Moonlight’s Clermont Gold Project area. This project has been the focus of recent exploration success, including expansions at the Leo Grande gold system, which has seen significant drilling activity and resource advancement in recent months.
