Godolphin Sharpens Focus on High-Grade Gold-Copper Targets in Lachlan Fold Belt

Mining By Maxwell Dee 4 min read

Godolphin Resources intensifies exploration at Mt Aubrey and Copper Hill East, leveraging a streamlined portfolio and a strategic pivot to precious and base metals in NSW’s Lachlan Fold Belt.

  • 6km gold corridor at Mt Aubrey with 62,400oz inferred resource
  • 8km copper-gold corridor at Copper Hill East near major porphyry deposits
  • Portfolio rationalised with non-core asset divestments and Narraburra spin-out planned
  • Aircore drilling and fieldwork imminent to extend high-grade mineralisation
  • Proposed rebrand to Orbit Resources reflecting new strategic focus

Strategic Shift Towards Gold and Copper in NSW

Godolphin Resources Limited (ASX:GRL) is repositioning itself as a focused explorer and developer of precious and base metals within the Lachlan Fold Belt, NSW, a region renowned for world-class mineral deposits. The company’s updated strategy highlights a concentrated push on its 100%-owned Mt Aubrey Gold Project and Copper Hill East Project, both boasting extensive gold and copper corridors with promising historical data underpinning near-term exploration plans.

Mt Aubrey Gold Project: Untapped Potential Along a 6km Corridor

The Mt Aubrey Gold Project anchors Godolphin’s gold portfolio with an inferred mineral resource of 1.21 million tonnes grading 1.61g/t gold, equating to 62,400 ounces. This deposit lies within a 6km long demagnetised structural corridor that remains only sporadically drill tested. Historical mining by BHP from 1989 to 1991 extracted ore from shallow open pits but left deeper, fresh rock mineralisation untouched due to free-digging methods employed at the time.

Notably, Godolphin’s 2020 aircore drilling intersected high-grade zones such as 22m at 2.15g/t gold including 6m at 7.21g/t, located immediately south of the main pit in previously unmined areas. The company plans to extend these gold lodes both at depth and along strike using cost-effective aircore drilling, aiming to rapidly delineate new mineralisation.

Copper Hill East: A New Frontier in Porphyry Exploration

Less than 10km north of the Copper Hill Porphyry Deposit, Godolphin’s Copper Hill East Project covers an 8km copper-gold corridor within the Molong Volcanic Belt, a geological domain hosting major deposits like Cadia and Boda-Kaiser. The Turrawonga Prospect, discovered in 2020, has already yielded encouraging drill intercepts including 32m at 0.29g/t gold and 0.13% copper, and 30m at 0.64g/t gold and 0.04% copper.

Drilling at Turrawonga revealed narrow monzonite porphyritic intrusions with hydrothermal veining and copper sulphides, interpreted as apophyses from a concealed porphyry system at depth. Godolphin intends to integrate historic and modern datasets, geological mapping, spectral analysis, magnetics, and induced polarisation geophysics, to refine targeting ahead of further drilling.

Expanding the Portfolio with Multiple High-Grade Prospects

Beyond Mt Aubrey and Copper Hill East, Godolphin’s Gold-Copper Portfolio spans 1,694km² and includes promising prospects such as Three Rivers and Lyons, where surface samples showed gold up to 4.41g/t and copper as high as 12.6%. The Calula Prospect, analogous to the Lewis Ponds Deposit, exhibits high-grade gold and copper mineralisation along an 8km trend with grab samples up to 9.13g/t gold and 2.99% copper.

Fieldwork is set to commence immediately across these targets, focusing on geological mapping and sampling, with plans to deploy modern geophysical surveys like IP and electromagnetics to prioritise drill targets.

Portfolio Rationalisation and Corporate Rebranding

Godolphin has streamlined its asset base by divesting non-core projects, including the Gundagai and Calarie Projects, and is progressing the spin-out of its Narraburra Rare Earths Project into a separately listed entity, Matrix Critical Minerals Limited. This corporate reshuffle allows a sharper focus on the high-value gold and copper assets and underpins the company’s proposed rebranding to Orbit Resources Limited, signalling a new chapter centred on advancing precious and base metals exploration and development.

Managing Director Jeneta Owens emphasised the company’s disciplined capital allocation, targeting projects with existing mineralisation and robust datasets to maximise resource growth and shareholder value. The strategy complements recent successes at the Lewis Ponds Gold-Silver Project and the Cousin Jack discovery, positioning Godolphin as a key player in NSW’s mineral exploration landscape.

Bottom Line?

Godolphin’s focused exploration push in a prolific NSW belt, backed by a streamlined portfolio and a clear strategy, sets the stage for significant resource growth pending upcoming drilling and field results.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will aircore drilling at Mt Aubrey confirm extensions to high-grade gold mineralisation?
  • Can integration of geophysical data at Copper Hill East pinpoint a concealed porphyry system?
  • How will the Narraburra spin-out and rebranding to Orbit Resources impact investor perception and capital allocation?
