MRG Metals Raises $800K to Expand High-Grade Garies Rare Earth Project

Mining By Maxwell Dee 3 min read

MRG Metals has secured $800,000 through a placement and board commitment to accelerate development at its ultra high-grade Garies Rare Earth Project in South Africa and advance exploration in Mozambique.

  • Placement raises $705K at $0.002 per share
  • Board commits $140K subject to shareholder approval
  • Funds target mining licence, resource drilling, and pilot plant development
  • High-grade DrillTarg deposit shows 4.49% TREO over 6.6m
  • Ongoing auger drilling at Mozambique projects to define resource footprint

Capital Raise Fuels Expansion of Garies Rare Earth Project

MRG Metals Limited (ASX:MRQ) has completed an $800,000 capital raising, combining a $705,000 placement and a $140,000 commitment from board and management, to fund critical development activities at its Garies Rare Earth Project in South Africa and ongoing exploration in Mozambique. The placement priced at $0.002 per share was led by Peak Asset Management, which will receive a 6% fee on funds raised.

The funds are earmarked primarily for advancing the Garies project, including completing the mining licence application, expanding resource drilling at the DrillTarg target, and testing 22 additional targets identified by Axiom Exploration Group. The company also plans step-out auger drilling at its Adriano and Fotinho Rare Earth Projects in Mozambique and support for its Corridor Heavy Mineral Sands joint venture.

DrillTarg Deposit Highlights Exceptional Grade and Metallurgy

Located about 70 kilometres northwest of Steenkampskraal and in the same district as the Zandkopsdrift Rare Earth Project, Garies offers compelling grades. Drilling at DrillTarg returned a peak intersection of 6.6 metres at 4.49% Total Rare Earth Oxide (TREO), well above the typical 1-2% TREO seen in most high-grade rare earth deposits globally. Furthermore, approximately 26% of the TREO consists of magnet rare earths such as neodymium, praseodymium, terbium, and dysprosium, which are highly sought after for permanent magnets.

Metallurgical testwork has confirmed a robust processing pathway, with 72% monazite recovery to a concentrate grading about 60% REO, and potential to exceed 80%. These results underpin the company’s strategy to progress towards a pilot plant, supported by the recent lodgement of the Mining Right conversion application in June.

Mozambique Projects Show Promising Heavy Mineral Grades

Parallel exploration efforts continue at the Adriano and Fotinho projects in Mozambique, where auger drilling has returned high total heavy mineral (THM) grades at surface. Adriano averages above 4.0% THM over 2.9 metres, with peak one-metre grades exceeding 9.5% THM at both Adriano and Fotinho. Mineralogical analysis of heavy mineral concentrates shows significant valuable components including monazite, rutile, and zircon, with TREO values supportive of a potential low-cost, low-strip mining operation.

MRG is currently conducting 200-metre grid auger drilling to delineate the mineralised footprint, aiming to progress towards a maiden Mineral Resource Estimation. The company’s commitment to these projects complements its ongoing Titanium Dioxide joint venture with Sinowin Lithium, which is targeting first production in 2027 with minimal capital required from MRG.

Strategic Partnerships and Next Steps

MRG is actively seeking strategic partners capable of advancing the Garies project through pilot plant development and further exploration. The capital raise and mining licence application provide a foundation for attracting such partners. Chairman Andrew Van Der Zwan emphasised the company’s ambition to both expand the DrillTarg resource and test untouched ground, highlighting the strong interest already generated by the Mining Right lodgement.

Alongside these developments, the company is considering a shareholder offer via an entitlement offer or share purchase plan to further bolster funding, though no final decision has been made. Investors will be watching closely as drilling results, licence approvals, and partnership announcements unfold.

Bottom Line?

MRG’s latest capital injection sets the stage for resource expansion and pilot plant progress, but the success of strategic partnerships and licence approvals will be pivotal.

Questions in the middle?

  • How will potential strategic partners influence the pace and scale of Garies development?
  • What results will upcoming drilling at Garies and Mozambique reveal about resource size and grade continuity?
  • When can shareholders expect clarity on the proposed entitlement offer or share purchase plan?
