IPCM Grant Boosts Speewah Project Feasibility Work

Japan Australia Fluorite Associates (JAFA) has secured a fresh $3 million tranche under the $7.4 million International Partnerships in Critical Minerals (IPCM) grant for the Speewah Fluorite Project in Western Australia. This latest funding injection, net of GST, is earmarked for advancing the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS), which remains on track for completion later this year.

The grant tranche release signals continued confidence from the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, which approved the payment following a review of the project’s tangible progress through the first half of 2026. To date, JAFA has received $6.4 million of the IPCM grant, underpinning critical pre-final investment decision (FID) activities.

Joint Venture Driving DFS and Project Development

Tivan Limited (ASX:TVN) is steering the DFS through an incorporated joint venture with Japanese heavyweights Sumitomo Corporation and the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC). Sumitomo, a Fortune Global 500 trading house, and JOGMEC, a Japanese government agency focused on securing stable mineral supplies, bring strategic weight to the partnership. ETFS Capital Limited also participates as a funding partner.

The DFS aims to solidify the project’s technical and economic parameters, feeding into the broader funding and development strategy. This follows Tivan’s recent appointment of ICA Natural Resources to lead debt financing efforts, reflecting a multi-pronged approach to securing capital for Speewah’s next phase.

Grant Background and Milestone Alignment

The $7.4 million IPCM grant was awarded to support the Speewah Project’s feasibility studies, with Tivan originally the grant recipient before novating the agreement to JAFA in August 2025. Earlier this year, JAFA negotiated a Deed of Variation to accelerate $3 million of funding into August 2026, aligning with key DFS milestones.

This structured funding approach aims to reduce financial risk and provide a clear runway for project advancement. The grant’s staged payments are contingent on meeting development milestones, underscoring the importance of the DFS’s timely progress and quality.

Strategic Importance of Speewah Fluorite

Fluorite is a critical mineral with growing demand in industries ranging from aluminium production to electric vehicle batteries. Speewah’s development sits at the nexus of Australia’s push to supply strategic minerals to global markets, particularly Japan, which relies heavily on secure critical mineral imports.

Tivan’s partnerships and government-backed funding illustrate the project’s strategic value, while ongoing feasibility work and capital raising efforts continue to shape its path towards production.

Bottom Line?

Speewah’s DFS funding milestone reduces project risk and sets the stage for key feasibility results later this year.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will the DFS confirm Speewah’s economic viability to trigger a final investment decision?
  • How will the joint venture structure influence future funding and operational control?
  • What impact will global fluorite market dynamics have on Speewah’s development timeline?
