Prospect Resources Expands Nyungu Central Copper Zone with Thick Intercepts
Prospect Resources reveals significant copper extensions at Nyungu Central, with wide intercepts outside current resource boundaries, while maiden drilling at Sharamba shows promising visual mineralisation.
- 65.8m at 0.42% Cu intercept extends Nyungu Central southeast
- 29.6m at 0.34% Cu expands mineralisation westward
- Four diamond rigs active including maiden Sharamba drilling
- Seven priority assay results pending from Phase 3 drilling
- New mineralised zone aligns with airborne EM anomaly
Nyungu Central Mineralisation Breaks New Ground
Prospect Resources Limited (ASX:PSC) has pushed the boundaries of its flagship Nyungu Central deposit at the Mumbezhi Copper Project in Zambia, with its Phase 3 drilling campaign delivering thick copper intercepts well beyond the existing Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE). The standout result comes from drill hole NCDD028, which returned a substantial 65.8 metres at 0.42% copper starting from 226 metres depth, including higher-grade intervals such as 13.2 metres at 0.82% Cu. Another hole, NCDD025, added 29.6 metres at 0.34% Cu, extending mineralisation westward. These intercepts lie outside or at the fringes of the current May 2026 MRE, signalling a new mineralised zone to the southeast of Nyungu Central.
This emerging zone correlates strongly with a shallow, continuous airborne electromagnetic (AEM) anomaly, reinforcing the geological model that copper mineralisation is closely tied to geophysical signatures. The discovery follows earlier Phase 3 results including a 44-metre intercept at 0.60% Cu reported in July, underscoring the deposit's potential to grow beyond its current footprint.
Drilling Momentum Accelerates with Four Rigs
The company now operates four diamond drill rigs, three at Nyungu Central and one at the Sharamba prospect, which lies about 10 kilometres northeast. To date, 16 holes totalling 4,723 metres have been completed at Nyungu Central's southern end, with assays pending for seven priority holes. Infill drilling aiming to upgrade resource confidence has also commenced, with a 6,200-metre program underway and an additional rig added to accelerate results delivery.
Sharamba, a fresh target defined by coincident AEM, IP chargeability, and termite hill geochemical anomalies, has seen six exploratory holes drilled. Visual copper mineralisation has been observed in five of these holes, suggesting the prospect may host shallow copper mineralisation associated with the airborne anomaly. Assays are awaited to confirm the grades and extent of mineralisation.
Geological Insights and Resource Growth Potential
Beyond the drilling results, a significant geological development has been the identification of a mafic intrusive unit beneath the garnet-graphite-kyanite ore schist sequence, which forms a competent basal position. This insight is particularly relevant as the southeastern part of Nyungu Central had not been historically targeted, opening new exploration avenues.
Prospect’s Managing Director Sam Hosack emphasised that the ongoing drilling continues to validate the company’s geological model and targeting strategy, suggesting Mumbezhi hosts a much larger copper system than currently reflected in the existing MRE. This optimism aligns with recent resource upgrades where Mumbezhi’s Mineral Resource Estimate rose to 208.1 million tonnes at 0.42% Cu, containing 877,000 tonnes of copper.
Next Steps and Market Implications
With a substantial pipeline of pending assays and ongoing infill drilling, Prospect Resources is poised to refine and potentially expand its resource base further. The company plans to deliver a Scoping Study in the first quarter of 2027, potentially followed by Feasibility Studies, aiming to advance Mumbezhi towards commercial production. Additionally, regional exploration continues with targets like Sharamba, Kamafamba, and Chipimpa being tested for satellite deposits that could feed a central processing hub.
While the pending assay results introduce some uncertainty regarding the full scale of resource growth, the consistent drilling success and geological validation give a strong indication of upside potential. Investors will be watching closely as assays come in and the company updates its resource estimates and project development plans.
Bottom Line?
Nyungu Central’s expanding copper footprint and promising Sharamba start highlight Mumbezhi’s growing resource potential ahead of a 2027 scoping study.
Questions in the middle?
- How will pending assay results from priority holes reshape Nyungu Central’s resource estimate?
- Can Sharamba’s visual mineralisation translate into a viable satellite deposit?
- What impact will the newly identified mafic intrusive unit have on mining strategy and resource modelling?
