Significant Copper Porphyry Intercept at Ilksan

Sarytogan Graphite Limited (ASX:SGA) has delivered its first assay results from diamond drilling at the Ilksan prospect within the Baynazar copper project in central Kazakhstan. Drill hole DDH-IL26002 returned a continuous 229 metres grading 0.14% copper and 0.027ppm gold from surface, confirming the presence of a copper porphyry system. Notably, higher-grade intervals include 11.6 metres at 0.26% copper with 407ppm molybdenum starting at 33.8 metres, and 16.2 metres at 0.36% copper with gold and silver from 159.7 metres depth.

The mineralisation style is typical of copper porphyry deposits, with abundant copper minerals such as malachite, azurite, chalcopyrite, and bornite observed in core samples. The presence of strong potassic alteration, a key hydrothermal signature, suggests the drilling has intersected the optimal vertical zone within the intrusion for copper deposit formation. This bodes well for the potential of nearby high-grade mineralisation.

Geological Context and Historical Verification

The Baynazar project, pegged in 2024, lies within Kazakhstan’s prolific Central Asian Orogenic Belt, a region known for hosting some of the world’s lowest-cost copper mines thanks to favourable power and labour costs. The Ilksan prospect itself was previously drilled during Soviet-era exploration, with historic holes showing copper grades increasing with depth but with uncertain reliability. Sarytogan’s current drilling is designed to verify and extend these historical results, with DDH-IL26002 collared just 10 metres from a former Soviet hole.

Prior exploration by Sarytogan included a high-resolution airborne magnetic survey and extensive soil sampling, which guided the recent drilling campaign. Trenching at Ilksan previously identified a 270-metre copper intercept averaging 0.13% copper, reinforcing the prospect’s potential.

Two further diamond drill holes, DDH-IL26001A and DDH-IL26003, have been completed, with assays expected within the current quarter. These holes were drilled to depths of 318 metres and 452 metres respectively, targeting extensions of the mineralised system. The results will be critical to defining the extent and grade of the copper porphyry mineralisation and informing resource estimation.
