Strategic Expansion of JV Portfolio

Nex Metals Explorations Ltd (ASX:NME) and the Wangkatja Tjungula Aboriginal Corporation (WTAC) have agreed to acquire the East Scotia Gold Project, marking the second asset addition to their joint venture. The project comprises three granted exploration licences totalling 133.41 square kilometres in Western Australia’s Eastern Goldfields, a region renowned for its gold endowment.

Located approximately 60 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, the East Scotia Project sits within the same lithological and structural corridor that hosts the Golden Cities and Kanowna Belle mining complexes. This geological setting enhances its appeal, given the proven mineralisation in the vicinity.

Attractive Acquisition Terms and Funding Model

The acquisition consideration is set at $100,000, fully funded by WTAC under the joint venture terms, alongside a 2% net smelter return (NSR) royalty. The payment is structured with 75% due on completion and the remainder upon tenement transfer, subject to due diligence and statutory approvals. This funding arrangement provides Nex Metals shareholders with leverage, as WTAC shoulders the upfront costs while contributing to community wealth creation.

Untapped Exploration Potential

Notably, the East Scotia Gold Project has seen no modern exploration activity since the early 2000s. Historical tenure was held by Centaur Mining and AurionGold in the 1990s and early 2000s, but no substantial programs have been conducted since. This gap offers a fresh exploration opportunity to validate and build upon legacy data.

Initial exploration plans include auger geochemistry, geological reconnaissance, and first-pass drilling using rotary air blast (RAB) and aircore methods. These activities aim to refine geological understanding and identify priority targets for follow-up work, pending necessary regulatory approvals.

JV’s Broader WA Gold Ambitions

The East Scotia acquisition complements the JV’s existing projects, including the Kookynie Tailings Project and the West Point Copper-Gold Project. Nex Metals and WTAC’s collaboration combines technical expertise, operational capability, and cultural knowledge, positioning them to become a significant player in Western Australia’s gold exploration landscape.

Managing Director Ken Allen emphasised the project’s alignment with the JV’s strategic criteria: geological fundamentals, favourable commercial terms, and efficient evaluation potential. The JV’s governance and funding structures underpin a platform for sustainable growth in the region.

Bottom Line?

Completion hinges on due diligence and approvals, but the East Scotia Project acquisition strengthens the JV’s foothold in a proven gold belt with significant exploration upside.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will initial exploration validate the project's geological potential after two decades of inactivity?
  • How will the JV balance exploration expenditure with other projects like Kookynie Tailings?
  • What are the final terms and implications of the 2% NSR royalty for future project economics?
