Early Gas Breakthrough Signals Reservoir Response

Botala Energy Ltd (ASX:BTE) has reported encouraging progress from its Pitse Pilot within the Serowe Coal Bed Methane (CBM) Project in Botswana. The principal production-test well, Serowe-3.5B, is now showing gas presence while the water level remains significantly above the coal seam, an early sign that the reservoir is beginning to desorb gas as bottom-hole pressure declines. This observation precedes full dewatering and is a positive indicator of reservoir responsiveness.

Water production at Serowe-3.5B is steady at approximately 12.2 barrels per hour (around 293 barrels per day), with the fluid level about 80 metres above the coal seam. Casing pressure has been observed rebuilding to roughly 42 psi after controlled pressure releases, demonstrating the well’s ability to recharge gas phases. However, Botala cautions that commercial deliverability has yet to be confirmed and remains subject to further testing.

Support Wells Validate Multiple Gas Horizons

Complementing the main well's progress, support wells Serowe-3.3 and Serowe-3.5A are underpinning the development case. Serowe-3.3 is producing substantial gas from the Upper Morupule seam, a second coal horizon beneath the primary Serowe seam, expanding the potential scale and flexibility of the project’s development options.

Meanwhile, Serowe-3.5A successfully underwent a controlled blowdown, flaring gas for 30 minutes to relieve system pressure during equipment changeover. The well rapidly rebuilt casing pressure from zero to approximately 48 psi in three days, with the fluid level maintaining about 10 metres above the coal seam, indicating strong reservoir recharge.

Resource Base and Development Pathway

Botala’s Serowe CBM Project holds independently certified contingent gas resources of 454 billion cubic feet (Bcf) 2C and 7.1 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) 3C, equivalent to about 471 and 7,542 petajoules (PJ) respectively. These estimates are derived from less than 5% of the company’s 4,200 square kilometre exploration acreage.

The Pitse Pilot’s objective is to generate production data that can support independent reserves certification and refine the Bankable Feasibility Study. The company envisions a phased development strategy targeting LNG production of around 3.5 PJ per annum, roughly 200 tonnes per day, from an eventual wellfield comprising approximately 108 wells.

All necessary environmental approvals are in place for the gasfield, LNG facilities, energy hubs, and pipeline corridors, positioning Botala to advance toward commercialisation once sustainable gas flow rates are demonstrated.

Next Steps and Market Implications

The critical milestone ahead is establishing sustainable commercial gas flow from Serowe-3.5B. Success here would unlock key data to accelerate reserves certification, project financing, and gas sales negotiations. The pilot’s early gas observations, combined with strong pressure responses and water production, suggest the reservoir is behaving as expected, but the company remains cautious; commercial recovery of the broader resource base is yet to be proven.

Botala’s CEO Kris Martinick highlighted the significance of these results, noting the importance of the support wells in validating multiple coal seams and the potential for a scalable CBM-to-LNG pathway. The evolving data will be closely watched as Botala progresses the pilot toward a full-scale development decision.
