Drilling to probe untested deep magnetic anomalies

Javelin Minerals Ltd (ASX:JAV) is set to launch a significant diamond drilling campaign at its Coogee Gold-Copper Project in Western Australia, targeting two major, previously untested magnetic anomalies at Coogee North and Coogee West. The program, scheduled to start on 1 September, will see a diamond rig drill two holes totaling approximately 1,800 metres to depths between 800 and 1,000 metres. These anomalies are believed to represent large-scale intrusive bodies potentially hosting substantial gold-copper mineralisation.

The drilling is co-funded through the WA Government’s Exploration Incentive Scheme (EIS), with Westralian Diamond Drilling contracted to execute the program. This government backing reflects the prospectivity of these targets and supports Javelin’s exploration ambitions in a highly prospective terrane near Kalgoorlie.

Magnetic anomalies sit beneath known mineralisation

At Coogee North, the magnetic anomaly lies directly beneath the bulk of the existing Coogee Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE), which comprises 3.6 million tonnes at 1.08 g/t gold for 127,000 ounces and 1.0 million tonnes at 0.41% copper for 4,122 tonnes. Historic reverse circulation (RC) and aircore drilling have outlined significant gold-copper mineralisation near surface, including high-grade intersections such as 5 metres at 14.22 g/t gold and 4 metres at 1.91% copper. However, none of this drilling has tested the main source of the magnetic anomaly, which is modelled to sit around 700 metres below surface.

Javelin’s General Manager of Resources and Exploration, Mark Cossom, highlighted the potential scale of these targets, noting the correlation between the magnetic response and the epidote-siderite-magnetite alteration assemblage characteristic of skarn-type mineralisation. This alteration is a key vector in the search for deep-seated intrusive mineral systems.

Coogee West target masked by sediments but shows bedrock gold anomaly

The Coogee West target shares a similar magnetic signature to Coogee North but is obscured at surface by recent transported sediments associated with Lake Lefroy, making surface geochemical sampling ineffective. Nevertheless, historic shallow aircore drilling has revealed a broad bedrock gold anomaly extending approximately 900 by 500 metres, with gold grades up to 1.38 g/t in bottom-of-hole samples. No deep drilling has yet tested this anomaly, which modelling suggests could be linked to an intrusive body 450 to 600 metres below surface.

The planned diamond drill hole at Coogee West will reach approximately 1,000 metres depth to test this interpreted intrusion and its potential mineralisation. This hole is also co-funded through the EIS, underscoring the government’s support for advancing exploration in this promising area.

Project background and strategic significance

The Coogee Gold Project sits on a granted mining lease within the southern Kalgoorlie Terrane, a prolific gold province in the Yilgarn Craton. The deposit was previously mined by Ramelius Resources in 2013-14, producing 20,400 ounces of gold at 4.77 g/t. While extensive drilling was conducted around the known resource, much of the surrounding tenement remains underexplored, especially at depth.

Coogee’s location near major regional faults such as the Lefroy and Mt Monger faults places it within a structurally favourable setting for mineralisation. The identification of large magnetic anomalies associated with magnetite-bearing alteration zones provides a compelling exploration vector, potentially pointing to significant undiscovered mineral systems.

This drilling campaign represents a critical step in testing these conceptual targets, with the potential to materially enhance the project’s resource base if deep mineralisation is intersected. The results will provide valuable structural and lithological data to refine the understanding of the Coogee system and guide future exploration strategies.
