Azzuro Resources has defined maiden JORC (2012) Exploration Targets for its Oval Cu-Ni-PGE and Red Hill Cu-Au-VMS projects in Mongolia, revealing district-scale potential and planning a 14-hole drilling campaign to test priority bodies.
- Maiden JORC Exploration Targets at Oval and Red Hill
- Combined target range of 21Mt to 55Mt of copper, nickel, gold and PGEs
- 14-hole, 5,835m drilling program planned to test priority targets
- Potential for shared infrastructure due to project proximity
- Separate holes proposed to upgrade part of targets to Inferred Mineral Resource
Maiden JORC Exploration Targets Highlight District-Scale Potential
Azzuro Resources PLC (ASX:AZ9) has unveiled maiden JORC (2012) Exploration Target estimates for its flagship Oval Cu-Ni-PGE and Red Hill Cu-Au-VMS projects in southwest Mongolia. The two projects, situated just 8km apart within a single mineralised corridor, collectively suggest a substantial district-scale opportunity with combined exploration targets ranging from 21 million to 55 million tonnes of mineralisation. This multi-commodity exposure spans copper, nickel, gold and platinum group elements (PGEs), underscoring the strategic significance of Azzuro’s southwest Mongolian portfolio.
Distinct Mineralisation Styles, Unified Development Potential
Oval hosts a magmatic copper-nickel-PGE sulphide system with an estimated target of 6Mt to 25Mt grading 0.3% to 0.7% copper and 0.26% to 0.6% nickel, translating to 0.59% to 1.5% copper equivalent. Meanwhile, Red Hill features a volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) copper-gold system with targets between 15Mt and 30Mt grading 0.71% to 0.9% copper and 0.26g/t to 0.4g/t gold. Despite their differing mineralisation styles, the proximity of the two projects offers Azzuro the opportunity to plan exploration, infrastructure, and development on a consolidated basis, potentially sharing roads, power, camp facilities, and permitting processes.
Imminent Drilling to Test Priority Targets
Azzuro has designed a priority drilling program comprising 14 holes totaling approximately 5,835 metres to test the highest-priority exploration target bodies across both projects. At Oval, 10 holes (4,085m) will focus on five magnetic inversion target bodies, while at Red Hill, 4 holes (1,750m) will target the middle gravity and southern vein targets. Additionally, a separate lower-cost drilling pathway involving 3 holes at Oval and 11 holes at Red Hill could convert portions of the lower-range exploration targets into JORC (2012) Inferred Mineral Resources. Drilling is imminent, supported by ongoing geophysical studies including downhole electromagnetic (DHEM) and 3D induced polarisation (3DIP) surveys.
Technical Rigor Underpins Exploration Targets
The exploration targets have been independently estimated by Mine Project Consult (MPC), with block modelling support from SLR Consulting Australia, based on comprehensive drilling, geological mapping, and geophysical data compiled up to July 2026. The estimates adhere to the Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC Code 2012). While the targets are conceptual and not yet Mineral Resources, the detailed methodology includes Ordinary Kriging, constrained magnetic and gravity inversion modelling, and calibration against drillhole data.
Capital Efficiency and Strategic Synergies
Azzuro’s Managing Director Gan-Ochir Zunduisuren emphasised the strategic advantage of the two projects' proximity, noting the potential for shared infrastructure and a unified development pathway. This approach could improve capital efficiency by consolidating technical teams and equipment, streamlining permitting and community engagement, and enabling processing of multiple ore types through shared or complementary infrastructure.
Exploration and Development Next Steps
Beyond the priority drilling, Azzuro plans further rock-chip sampling at Red Hill, metallurgical testwork with results expected in October 2026, and additional regional exploration at Oval. The company also anticipates assay results for four recently completed drill holes at Red Hill in the coming weeks. The combined exploration strategy aims to refine the understanding of mineralisation, support potential resource upgrades, and advance both projects towards development readiness.
Given the conceptual nature of the exploration targets and the early stage of resource definition, the market will be watching closely for assay results and any resource upgrades that could validate the economic potential of these district-scale copper-nickel-gold-PGE systems.
Bottom Line?
Azzuro’s maiden JORC targets and imminent drilling mark a pivotal step in unlocking district-scale copper-nickel-gold-PGE potential in Mongolia, but results will be key to confirming economic viability.
Questions in the middle?
- Will the upcoming drilling convert significant portions of the exploration targets into JORC Mineral Resources?
- How will metallurgical testwork influence the potential processing pathways for the distinct ore types at Oval and Red Hill?
- What are the timelines and capital requirements for advancing these projects beyond exploration towards development?
