Serge Smolonogov Takes Helm at West Coast Silver

West Coast Silver Limited (ASX:WCE) has appointed Serge Smolonogov as Chief Executive Officer effective 24 August 2026, marking a pivotal leadership shift as the company prepares to advance its Elizabeth Hill Silver Project. Smolonogov, who remains an Executive Director, brings over three decades of mine geology and resource development experience across five continents, including a recent role as General Manager, Growth & Development at Adriatic Metals. His tenure there culminated in a US$1.25 billion acquisition by Dundee Precious Metals in 2025.

With the company entering a critical phase of resource definition and technical evaluation, the board has consolidated day-to-day executive responsibility under Smolonogov, who has been the technical driving force at Elizabeth Hill since joining in February 2026. This move aims to streamline accountability as West Coast Silver targets an updated Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE), metallurgical and geotechnical testwork, and a Scoping Study slated for completion in 2027.

Elizabeth Hill’s High-Grade Legacy and Growth Prospects

Elizabeth Hill is one of Australia’s highest-grade silver projects, historically producing 1.2 million ounces of silver at an extraordinary head grade of 2,194 grams per tonne before mining ceased in 2000 due to low silver prices at the time. Today, with silver trading near US$64 per ounce, the project’s economics look markedly different. The deposit remains open at depth and along strike, with recent drilling confirming a new high-grade silver zone beneath the historical workings.

The project’s maiden JORC 2012 Mineral Resource Estimate, announced in April 2026, stands at 2.8 million ounces of contained silver at an average grade of 617 g/t, with approximately 86% classified as Inferred. West Coast Silver is now executing a Growth and Development Plan focused on converting this inferred resource to higher confidence categories through infill and extension drilling, while also advancing metallurgical and geotechnical studies to underpin future economic assessments.

Exploration Pipeline and Land Consolidation

Beyond Elizabeth Hill itself, West Coast Silver controls a contiguous 180 square kilometre land package encompassing the Munni Munni Fault system and other parallel structures considered prospective for silver mineralisation analogues. This consolidation creates a robust pipeline of exploration targets advancing toward drill testing in 2027, aiming to unlock further growth potential in the region.

The company’s proximity to the Radio Hill processing facility, just 12 kilometres away, and an existing memorandum of understanding to evaluate processing options, adds to the strategic appeal of the project’s development pathway.

Leadership Transition and Near-Term Mandate

The appointment of Smolonogov follows the announced resignation of Executive Director Bruce Garlick, who will remain through early November to ensure an orderly handover. Non-Executive Chairman Vince Fayad praised Smolonogov’s technical leadership and the board’s decision to centralise accountability ahead of key milestones.

Smolonogov’s immediate focus includes completing infill and extension drilling to upgrade resource confidence, finalising metallurgical and geotechnical testwork to support the Scoping Study, and defining the new high-grade zone’s extent beneath the historical mine workings. His extensive background in mine development and resource growth positions him well to navigate this complex technical and commercial phase.

Bottom Line?

Smolonogov’s appointment signals West Coast Silver’s commitment to accelerating Elizabeth Hill’s transition from exploration to project evaluation, with upcoming technical milestones set to clarify the deposit’s development potential.

Questions in the middle?

  • How will updated resource confidence levels impact project economics and financing options?
  • What are the key technical risks in metallurgical and geotechnical testwork ahead of the Scoping Study?
  • Can exploration across the Munni Munni land package uncover additional high-grade silver zones to extend project life?
