Middle Island Resources has defined extensive gold anomalies at two new prospects within its Priboj Project, setting the stage for initial drilling in a previously unexplored region.
- Broad +10ppb gold soil anomalies over 500m to 1,000m lengths
- Rock chip assays up to 0.94g/t Au confirm mineralisation
- Targets resemble large-scale replacement-style gold systems
- Initial RC drilling planned pending licence and access approvals
- Copper exploration continues in adjacent Priboj licences
Large-Scale Gold Targets Emerge in Untapped Serbian Terrain
Middle Island Resources (ASX:MDI) has unveiled compelling new gold targets at its Priboj Project in Serbia, with two prospects, Zabrnjica and Beli Potok, revealing broad, coherent soil anomalies and rock chip samples indicative of significant mineralisation. These zones, previously untouched by modern exploration, display gold-in-soil anomalies exceeding 10 parts per billion (ppb) across areas up to 1,000 metres long and 500 metres wide, accompanied by altered, quartz-veined sediments.
Zabrnjica and Beli Potok: Soil and Rock Samples Paint Promising Picture
At Zabrnjica, an infill soil program tightened sampling grids to 50 by 100 metres, confirming a core gold anomaly stretching approximately 450 metres by 200 metres within a broader 500 by 500 metre zone. Rock chip assays from outcrop and float samples reached up to 0.94 grams per tonne (g/t) gold, complementing earlier results that peaked at 1.85 g/t Au.
Beli Potok, situated at the northern end of the Ober licence, showed two distinct +10 ppb gold-in-soil zones extending around 1,000 metres by 500 metres. Rock chip samples here returned assays up to 0.44 g/t Au. An expanded rock chip and geological mapping program has commenced to further delineate this target.
Targets Align with Replacement-Style Gold Systems
Middle Island’s Executive Chairman Daniel Raihani highlighted the geological parallels between these targets and large-scale replacement-style gold systems such as Donlin Creek in Alaska. The combination of extensive geochemical footprints, altered sedimentary host rocks, quartz veining, and disseminated mineralisation underpins the company’s confidence in the prospects’ potential.
Drilling Plans and Broader Exploration Ambitions
Initial reverse circulation (RC) drilling programs have been designed to test the Zabrnjica and Beli Potok targets. These are contingent on licence renewals and land access approvals, which are currently progressing. Meanwhile, the company is advancing copper-focused exploration within the adjacent Priboj and Jermovac licences. Notably, the Jelaca Prospect features a 900-metre copper-in-soil anomaly with rock chip samples grading up to 10.3% copper, while Jermovac’s wide-spaced soil sampling has returned copper assays as high as 5,054 ppm.
Priboj Project in a World-Class Mineral Province
Middle Island’s Priboj Project spans 195 square kilometres across three licences in central-western Serbia, a region known for world-class deposits including Zijin Mining’s Cukaru Peki and DPM Metals’ Vares projects. The Ober licence, hosting the new gold targets, is dominated by Devonian to Triassic metasediments prospective for sediment-hosted replacement-style gold deposits. No prior modern exploration has been recorded here, underscoring the significance of Middle Island’s findings.
Bottom Line?
The confirmation of large-scale gold anomalies at Zabrnjica and Beli Potok adds promising depth to Middle Island’s Serbian portfolio, but upcoming drilling and licence renewals will be critical to validate these early-stage targets.
Questions in the middle?
- Will initial RC drilling confirm economically viable gold mineralisation at Zabrnjica and Beli Potok?
- How might licence renewal and land access negotiations impact the exploration timeline?
- Can the company’s copper targets in adjacent licences replicate the scale of recent gold anomalies?
