Sentinel Secures 1Moz Gold Project in Nevada

Sentinel Metals Limited (ASX:SNM) has cemented its presence in North America’s gold mining landscape by completing the acquisition of the Big Springs Gold Project in Nevada from Capricorn Metals (ASX:CMM). This deal adds a substantial 1.01 million ounce gold resource to Sentinel’s portfolio, effectively doubling its North American contained gold to nearly two million ounces when combined with its Montana-based Columbia Gold-Silver Project.

The acquisition was finalised following shareholder approval on 20 August and a $15 million share placement at $0.58 per share. Sentinel paid A$8.5 million in cash upfront and issued 8.6 million shares valued at A$5 million to Capricorn, with an additional contingent consideration of up to A$12.5 million payable upon meeting certain resource, share price, or transaction milestones.

Big Springs: A Permitted, High-Potential Asset

Situated in Elko County within Nevada’s prolific Independence Trend, Big Springs is a well-established gold project with a JORC Mineral Resource Estimate of 15.5 million tonnes grading 2.0 grams per tonne gold. The project holds a permitted Plan of Operations for both open pit and underground mining, offering a rare combination of scale and operational readiness.

Historical mining between 1987 and 1993 yielded approximately 386,000 ounces from seven open pits. However, Sentinel sees significant exploration upside, with multiple high-grade ore shoots identified but largely untested by modern drilling techniques. The project’s 93 square kilometre landholding remains underexplored despite its proximity to the Jerritt Canyon gold system and Carlin-style mineralised trends, suggesting a pipeline of growth opportunities.

Drilling Campaign and Expansion Plans Underway

Sentinel’s immediate focus is a 10,000-metre drilling campaign targeting high-grade extensions at the North Sammy target, a granted Mining Lease within Big Springs. Historical intercepts at North Sammy include an impressive 18.3 metres at 33.4 grams per tonne gold, with the mineralisation remaining open at depth and ripe for expansion.

Alongside drilling, the company is reviewing options to expand the existing Mine Plan of Operations to facilitate exploration across district-scale targets, potentially unlocking further value from the extensive land package.

Strategic Positioning in Tier-1 US Jurisdictions

Big Springs complements Sentinel’s flagship Columbia Gold-Silver Project in Montana, which hosts a 920,000-ounce gold resource and 3.1 million ounces of silver. Together, these assets position Sentinel as a meaningful North American gold explorer focused on Tier-1 jurisdictions, with a combined resource nearing two million ounces of contained gold.

Managing Director Matt Herbert highlighted the strategic significance of the acquisition, noting the advanced stage of Big Springs and its exceptional exploration potential. He also referenced the company’s recent success at Columbia, where a maiden drill hole returned a standout intercept of 46.8 metres grading 5.5 grams per tonne gold, underscoring the growth prospects across Sentinel’s portfolio.

Bottom Line?

Sentinel’s acquisition of Big Springs significantly enhances its North American gold footprint, but the real test lies ahead in drilling results and realising the project’s exploration upside.

Questions in the middle?

  • How will Sentinel’s drilling campaign at North Sammy redefine the project’s resource profile?
  • What impact could the contingent consideration payments have on Sentinel’s financial flexibility?
  • Will Sentinel expand Big Springs’ Mine Plan to unlock district-scale opportunities?
