Air New Zealand’s 2026 Revenue Rises 3.9% Despite $336 Million Pre-Tax Loss

Fuel Price Surge and Engine Troubles Drive Heavy Loss

Air New Zealand (ASX:AIZ) swung to a NZD 242 million net loss after tax for the 2026 financial year, a sharp reversal from a NZD 108 million profit in 2025. The loss before tax was NZD 336 million, marking a 305% plunge from the prior year’s NZD 164 million profit. While revenue climbed 3.9% to NZD 7.0 billion, the airline was hammered by a perfect storm of external cost pressures.

The Middle East conflict sent jet fuel prices soaring, adding an estimated NZD 328 million in costs beyond prior forecasts. The airline carried 16 million passengers, up 0.6%, with passenger revenue rising 4.8% to NZD 6.1 billion. Capacity increased 1.3% as aircraft returned to service, though this was partly offset by fuel-driven capacity cuts. Cargo revenue dipped slightly by 0.6% to NZD 484 million amid higher freight costs and softer demand.

In June, Air New Zealand unveiled its new strategy, Te Pae Hou - Our Future, focused on three pillars: Customer First, Targeted Growth, and Resilient and Future Fit. CEO Nikhil Ravishankar emphasised the airline’s commitment to rebuilding financial resilience and commercial sustainability, with a disciplined approach to costs and capital.

The airline delivered NZD 94 million in incremental transformation benefits in 2026 and identified a further NZD 135 million in annualised savings to take effect in 2027. These include cost and labour productivity programmes, engineering and maintenance transformations, and capital management improvements.

Balance Sheet and Dividend Suspension

Liquidity stood at NZD 1.6 billion, slightly above the target range, but net debt to EBITDA ballooned to 3.8x from 1.2x in 2025, reflecting the earnings decline and capital expenditure of NZD 1.2 billion. The airline’s capital management framework guided the decision to withhold a final dividend for 2026, continuing the suspension initiated amid the Covid recovery and engine disruptions.

Uncertain Outlook as Fuel Volatility Persists

Air New Zealand declined to provide earnings guidance for 2027, citing ongoing uncertainty around the Middle East conflict and jet fuel prices currently around US$150 per barrel. The airline expects 2027 to be a transition and recovery year with operational momentum offset by elevated fuel costs weighing on profitability.

While engine availability issues are easing, with financial impacts expected to reduce to NZD 70-90 million, aviation system costs and airport charges continue to rise well above inflation. Maintenance costs are forecast to fall by NZD 50-100 million in 2027.

Strong inbound bookings signal positive tourism prospects, and the airline’s investments in onboard product and Kiwi hospitality aim to capitalize on New Zealand’s desirability as a destination. The company plans a detailed strategy update and medium-term financial objectives at an Investor Day later this year.

Sustainability Commitments and Fleet Investments

Air New Zealand continues to advance its sustainability agenda, aiming for net zero carbon emissions from jet fuel by 2050. The airline uplifted 1.2% of jet fuel as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in 2026, down from 1.7% in 2025, reflecting cost pressures exacerbated by fuel price spikes.

Fleet investments include the ongoing retrofit of Boeing 787 aircraft and the introduction of new Airbus A321neos and ATR72-600s. The airline is negotiating to rephase Boeing 787 deliveries to smooth capital expenditure and align capacity with growth expectations.

Operational efficiency initiatives and carbon credit purchases also form part of the airline’s climate strategy, though these currently contribute modestly to emissions reductions.
