Hawk Resources (ASX:HWK) has landed a crucial Mining Entry Permit (MEP) from the Western Australian Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, clearing the path for exploration at its Olympus scandium project in the West Musgrave region. This permit follows the completion of a Cultural Heritage Survey with the Ngaanyatjarra Traditional Owners, which granted the heritage clearances necessary for on-ground activities such as soil and rock sampling, geophysical surveys, and RAB drilling.
While the MEP is a significant milestone, Hawk is still awaiting the final consent from the WA Minister for Mines and the departmental approval of its Programme of Work (PoW), expected in September 2026. The company is optimistic that this last hurdle will be swiftly cleared given the low-impact nature of the initial exploration plans.
A Potential New Scandium Province Emerges
Olympus hosts a striking scandium anomaly spanning approximately 4km by 7km, with historic pXRF soil analyses revealing grades exceeding 500ppm scandium and peak RAB drilling intercepts reaching up to 11 metres at 934ppm from surface. Individual 1-metre samples have shown grades as high as 2,164ppm scandium, although Hawk cautions that these pXRF results are indicative and require laboratory assays for confirmation.
The project area, covering some 309km2 under two granted exploration licences, was previously explored by Redstone Resources between 2001 and 2009 for copper, nickel, cobalt, PGE, and gold. Their work included geological mapping, soil and lag sampling, and 42 RAB holes. Although scandium was not the primary target, anomalous scandium results were recorded, highlighting the unexplored potential of the region.

Hawk plans to commence verification soil sampling over the priority scandium anomaly in September, followed by detailed soil sampling and initial drilling contingent on positive results. The exploration program covers roughly 80km2 within the priority area and aims to delineate drill targets.

Within Australia, several scandium projects are under exploration, notably near Fifield, NSW, including those owned by Sunrise Energy Metals, Australian Mines, and Rio Tinto. Hawk’s Olympus project adds to this emerging landscape, with the company advancing towards initial drilling and assay verification.
Project Location and Access Logistics
Situated roughly 285km west of Yulara and 150km northeast of Warburton, Olympus lies in a remote but accessible part of Western Australia’s West Musgrave region. Access is via a turnoff on the Great Central Highway near Warakurna Roadhouse, which provides essential services and accommodation. The terrain is predominantly flat, covered by calcrete, calcareous gravels, and aeolian sands, with low open woodlands and tussock grasses.
