Provaris Energy Ltd (ASX:PV1) has taken a significant step towards commercialising its proprietary compressed hydrogen tanks by entering a technical collaboration with Himile Heavy Industries. The partnership aims to move beyond the prototype phase, developed in Norway, to full commercial-scale manufacturing at Himile's extensive facilities in Shandong, China.

Himile, a heavyweight in pressure vessel fabrication with over 17 years of experience and a workforce exceeding 3,000 employees including 800 engineers, brings industrial-scale manufacturing capabilities that complement Provaris' innovative tank designs and robotic welding technologies. This collaboration builds on a prior successful partnership in the liquefied CO₂ tank program with Yinson, signalling continuity and confidence in Provaris' approach.

Robotics and Automation at the Core

The technical collaboration includes a comprehensive assessment of manufacturing readiness, facility requirements, and the translation of Provaris’ digital twin and robotic fabrication methods into a commercial production environment. Himile’s engineers recently visited Provaris’ Hydrogen Prototype Tank Program and Robotics Innovation Centre in Fiskå, Norway, inspecting ongoing fabrication and automation workflows.

Key areas of focus include optimising laser welding automation, designing robotic fabrication cells, and developing production layouts that enhance efficiency and quality. These efforts aim to improve fabrication economics and support the serial production of hydrogen containment tanks for Provaris’ H2Neo™ hydrogen carriers and H2Leo™ storage barges.

Strategic Manufacturing and Market Opportunities

The collaboration also encompasses cost estimation, capacity planning, and commercial manufacturing readiness. These outputs will underpin Provaris’ discussions with shipyards and strategic partners including “K” LINE and Clarksons, aligning manufacturing capabilities with shipping deployment plans.

Moreover, the partnership explores long-term manufacturing, licensing, and global deployment opportunities for Provaris’ tank technologies, with a particular eye on local market prospects in China. Himile’s established presence and track record in delivering over 25,000 pressure vessels and complex modules for the oil and gas sector position it well to support these ambitions.
