Thorney Opportunities Posts $4.44M Pre-Tax Loss, Boosts Final Dividend

Financial Services By Claire Turing 4 min read

Thorney Opportunities Ltd swung to a $4.44 million loss before tax in FY2026, weighed down by unrealised investment losses, yet increased its final dividend and pressed on with share buybacks.

  • Net loss before tax of $4.44 million in FY2026
  • Final fully franked dividend up 6.5% to 1.65 cents per share
  • Net tangible assets per share declined slightly to 89.3 cents
  • Continued on-market share buyback, purchasing 7.28 million shares
  • Unrealised losses include $5.9 million hit from unlisted 20 Cashews investment

Financial Performance Turns Negative on Investment Losses

Thorney Opportunities Ltd (ASX:TOP) posted a loss before tax of $4.44 million for the year ended 30 June 2026, a sharp reversal from the $14.1 million profit recorded in FY2025. The swing largely reflects unrealised losses on its investment portfolio, including a $5.9 million fair value write-down on its unlisted holding in 20 Cashews Pty Ltd. Despite the loss, the company reported a modest positive net profit after tax of $0.86 million.

The company’s net tangible assets (NTA) per share edged down to 89.3 cents from 90.3 cents the prior year, reflecting the investment portfolio’s mixed performance and the impact of ongoing capital management activities.

Dividend Increased Amid Challenging Market Conditions

In a move that may surprise some investors given the loss, Thorney Opportunities declared a final fully franked dividend of 1.65 cents per share, up 6.5% from the prior year’s 1.55 cents. This brings total dividends for FY2026 to 2.75 cents per share, a 3.8% increase over FY2025. However, the company has suspended its Dividend Reinvestment Plan (DRP) for this final dividend, signaling a preference to conserve cash or avoid dilution.

The dividend remains fully franked at a 25% tax rate, reflecting the company’s ongoing ability to generate franking credits despite utilising tax losses. The final dividend is payable on 30 September 2026 to shareholders on record as of 11 September.

Active Portfolio Management and Capital Allocation

Chairman Alex Waislitz noted that FY2026 was marked by "active portfolio management and disciplined capital allocation" amid a backdrop of strong equity markets tempered by geopolitical and economic uncertainties. The company’s investment approach remains focused on identifying undervalued companies with potential for operational improvement or strategic change.

Top portfolio performers included Southern Cross Electrical Engineering, Macmahon Holdings, QuickFee, Service Stream, and Zip Co. These stocks benefitted from improved operations, industry tailwinds, and stronger dividends. Conversely, holdings such as AMA Group, Austin Engineering, and 20 Cashews detracted from performance.

Cash reserves shrank significantly to $2.9 million from $32.8 million the prior year, driven by operating outflows, investment purchases, dividends paid, and $4.6 million spent on share buybacks. The company repurchased 7.28 million shares at an average price of 63.2 cents, continuing a buyback program that has returned over $16 million to shareholders since inception.

Investment Manager Fees and Governance

Thorney Management Services Pty Ltd, controlled by Mr Waislitz, earned $2.67 million in base management fees and $0.22 million in performance fees for FY2026, down from $2.69 million and $2.2 million respectively in FY2025. The performance fee decline aligns with the weaker investment returns. Independent auditor Ernst & Young provided an unqualified opinion on the financial statements.

The board remains composed of experienced directors, including Chairman Alex Waislitz and Lead Independent Director Dr Gary Weiss. Governance disclosures confirm adherence to ASX principles, with no significant environmental or regulatory issues reported.

Outlook Amid Uncertain Markets

Looking forward, the company expects market conditions to remain volatile, influenced by inflation trends, central bank policies, geopolitical tensions, and the evolving impact of artificial intelligence on markets. The board expressed optimism about emerging opportunities and reaffirmed its commitment to capital preservation and shareholder returns.

Thorney Opportunities’ ongoing challenge remains the persistent discount of its share price to net tangible asset backing, a common issue in the listed investment company sector. Management continues to pursue initiatives to enhance market recognition and shareholder value.

Bottom Line?

Thorney’s FY2026 results highlight the challenges of navigating volatile markets with active portfolio management, underscoring the importance of monitoring unlisted asset valuations and capital deployment strategies.

Questions in the middle?

  • How will Thorney Opportunities address the persistent discount between share price and net tangible assets?
  • What impact will ongoing geopolitical and economic uncertainties have on the company’s investment strategy?
  • Will the suspension of the Dividend Reinvestment Plan signal a shift in capital management priorities?
